When France lost its colonies in North America during the Seven Years' War, most of its North American possessions switched allegiance to Great Britain; however, Quebec stayed with France and became known as La Ville de Québec (Quesnel). One account says that Pierre Bourassa explored the area early in 1794 while Joseph Bourassa was exploring Canada; he called it Pointe Coupee because there was no point reaching Coupee River from where he could see it from his ship anchored offshore because of an iceberg obstructing navigation. In 1836, John Quincy Adams included a part of present-day Arlington Heights Township (now part of Wheaton) within Grayslake Township so that people living near Grayslake would not have to move if their land changed hands between townships or villages. In 1840, Grayslake Township incorporated as a village; Arlington Heights followed suit two years later but kept its original name for about 20 years until it changed back to Arlington Heights Village on November 6, 1884. The first settlers arrived soon after Grayslake Township formed: two families from Kentucky moved into what is now Elmwood Road just north of West Lawn Drive on December 12th and these are generally considered the founding fathers of Arlington Heights Village proper which began developing around this time as far back as 1837/38 when many small farms around Grayslake were acquired along with some woods east side Old Orchard Road including what is now Hasseltine Terrace Many other families followed throughout those early decades such as those from Massachusetts led by Captain Samuel Gridley who purchased 320 acres including much of today's Addison Park Reserve northeast corner Wilson Rd & Erie Rd also home to Little Italy's oldest building - The Italian Masons Lodge No 1 c1850 still standing
