Arlington Heights, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 35,605 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Arlington Heights" comes from Arlington Manor on the border of Arlington and Winnetka townships. The manor was built in 1831 by Captain John Fenton and his family as their homeplace. The name also alluded to an estate located in present-day Arlington Heights that belonged to George Washington's father-in-law, James K. Polk Sr., and later to his son James K. Polk Jr.. In 1888, Colonel Edward Everett Hale bought the estate from Mr. Fenton for $2 million; he renamed it Arlington House after his wife's family home in Virginia where she spent most of her childhood. In 1901, when Cook County was created, Arlington Heights became one of its first municipalities with a population over 5500 residents (as compared to Winnetka’s 3200). On December 12th 1903 Mayor John Hynes announced that all businesses within three blocks of Union Station would be closed on New Year’s Day due to a drought caused by severe freezes during winter season; this decision proved unpopular among many business owners who saw it as a means of forcing them out of business during what had been seen as a tough economic time for the community; but they eventually relented and reopened on January 1st 1904 following city ordinance which stated that no businesses could be closed without prior written consent from all interested parties including those affected by prohibitionism at the time (the grocery store mentioned above still remains open today). The Turnpike was opened through town in 1873 which helped spur development along North Avenue eastward into Park Ridge (then known as Westchester Township) while also putting more people into touch with other parts of Cook County through service stations and other industrial sites located just outside town limits like Skokie being served only by Route 66 until Interstate 90 opened up about 15 miles away providing better access for both workers and consumers alike which has resulted in some current day streets/ avenues named after auto manufacturers or companies such as Chrysler Corporation or Ford Motor Company

1856- The first white settler in Arlington Heights was James H. Goode, who arrived in 1856. He and his family, consisting of himself, his wife Anna (née McClanahan), their two daughters, and a son John, built a log cabin on the present site of the Arlington Heights Golf Course. In 1857 Goode married Sarah Atherton, who came from Scotland with her parents. They raised six children: James H., Sarah A., John M., Margaret C., David B., and Hamilton W. Goode. In 1881 when Arlington Heights was officially incorporated as a village, James H.'s grandson Hamilton W. Goode became its first mayor. In 1916 Arlington Heights became part of the City of Chicago along with other villages within its boundaries. The following year it elected its first female Mayor, Jessie Laughlin Bacon. Mrs. Bacon served until her death in office in 1948 and is buried at Arlington Heights Cemetery under the name of her late predecessor Mrs.]
