Arlington Heights, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, U.S.A. The population was 54,824 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Chicago and the largest suburb of Chicago. The City of Arlington Heights covers an area of 13 square miles (33 km²). The first settlement in what is now Arlington Heights was made up of a group of farmers who gathered around the small town of Westchester on the Northwest Side about 1867. In 1870, the village was incorporated as Arlington Heights by act of the state legislature and named for George Washington Parish located east of Westchester on Long Island Sound. The first businesses in Arlington Heights were grocery store clerks and milk dealers who set up shop along Michigan Avenue near Higgins Road to sell their product from horse drawn carts or wagons pulled by horses or dogs pulling buggies; these early merchants quickly realized that they needed more space to put their products so they started building stores on Cannon Drive which became known as "the mall."
