Antioch, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. Antioch is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first people to live in Antioch were the Potawatomi Indians who inhabited what is now Antioch Township from about 1800 to 1812. The first European settlers in Antioch were Nicholas Joliffe and his family who arrived on horseback from Great Britain in 1814. They built a cabin on the east side of what is now Park Avenue and named it "Joliffe's Point." In 1824, John C. Nicollet purchased land east of present day Park Avenue and called it "Nicollet's Prairie." He developed this land into a village which he named after himself, George Nicollet Village. In 1846, Nicholas Joliffe sold his interest in George Nicollet Village to James Auld who renamed it "Auld's Landing." By 1870, there were 10 houses and 2 stores in Auld's Landing with a population of 100 citizens. In 1871-72 Wm Hines platted what is now downtown Antioch onto some of Nicollet’s original land which he had bought from James Auld for $1 per acre (4¢ per square foot). This new downtown was planned according to plan by Wm Hines as an openair market place where goods could be sold by vendors near the waterwheel located at Second Street and State Street. The idea for this market place originated with Captain Samuel Morse who wanted to prove that wire could be used instead of steamboats to transport goods between New York City and Boston. After hearing about Captain Morse's experiment, several members of Congress began planning an outdoor marketplace around Independence Hall where they would sell goods such as hats and gloves to passersby on Independence Mall during the late summer months when Philadelphia was at its busiest season. Thisenterprise failed because Mayor David Addison refused permission to build on public property within city limits while ample business existed within Philadelphia proper without having to go through Parliamentarian mode! In 1865–66 Jno Garretson organized farmers' markets throughout central Illinois under the name "National Agricultural Fair". These markets became popular enough that small towns throughout central Illinois begun producing their own crops such as corn or peas since transportation was then improved by railroads which made prices much more reasonable than when wagon trains transported these products across country!
