The city had a rail connection with Chicago so businesses could get goods to customers near home quickly. In 1903, Antioch incorporated as a village and experienced rapid growth due to its location on Calumet Avenue just north of downtown Chicago. By 1920, it had become one of Illinois' most populous cities with over 100,000 residents. The following decade saw another growth spurt as the city annexed neighboring townships including Arlington Heights (1924), Hinsdale (1928), Winnetka (1935), Beloit (1945) and Des Plaines (1950). These expansions made Antioch one of the most diverse urban areas in Illinois – both racially and ethnically – with many people from different parts of America living together in one town for more than 25 years. During World War II, Antioch played an important role as an industrial center; manufacturing munitions such as gasoline tanks and artillery shells for U.S forces fighting in Europe during World War II. After the war ended, significant efforts were made to rebuild downtown Antioch which included demolishing some older buildings dating back to 1847 while new construction began acrossCalumet Avenue featuring high-rise apartments that continue today as part of what is now known as "the Commercial District." A number of landmark buildings were also rehabilitated or replaced during this time including First Presbyterian Church which reopened after being closed for several years due to damage caused by fire; Bankers Trust Tower which served as headquarters for American Commerce Banks until 1984 when it was taken over by Merrill Lynch; Sears Tower which served as headquarters for Sears Roebuck & Co.; Anthony's Pizza located at 9 N Calumet Ave.; Justus Kappeler Auditorium building which housed Wheaton College music department until 2003 when it moved into another building nearby; and finally White Rock Lakefront Park where concerts are held every summer featuring popular summer acts like My Morning Jacket, The Allman Brothers Band, Fleetwood Mac etc..

The first store and post office were built there. In 1870, Antioch became the county seat of McLean County and many of the businesses that still exist today were founded here including J&A Stephenson's grocery store, Wm. Hutton's sawmill, GEO TV antennae factory, Antioch Bank (now part of First United State Bank), Antioch Telephone Company, and Antioch Ford dealership. In 1927 the county seat was moved to Effingham because of growing public sentiment against it in neighboring McLean County. Today, most of downtown Antioch remains unchanged from its early days with a few new buildings added over time such as the Federal Building which houses both the courthouse and jail; Corinthian Hall which is home to the local high school; and Stonestreet Presbyterian Church which is one of only two churches remaining standing in central Antioch after being replaced by an automobile dealership in the 1950s. There are also several small businesses scattered around town that continue to serve its residents including: Angelo's Italian American Cafe (serving breakfast until 11am daily); Paper Mill Pharmacy (which has been open since 1853); Appalachian Bicycles (formerly known as Golden Triangle Cycles) - a bike shop with more than 350 bikes available for rent or purchase; Mrs. Kapp's Cookies &Chips - a mom-and-pop bakery that serves up delicious cookies throughout the day; Mrs. Daley's Bakery - formerly called Mrs.'s Drug Store before moving into its current location in 2006; Old School Bake Shop - an old general store that has been turned into a bake shop with ovens inside]; Fenton Supply Company (a grocery store); Armstrong Hardware & Machine Store (a hardware store); butchers' markets - three locations: one located on Main Street near where Route 66 meets Interstate 35W; one on East Market Street off I-635 east of US 36W; and another location on South Water Street west of I-465 just outside of town limits
