The original home of Antiochus' army was on a bluff overlooking the Chicago River. In 1837, Blackhawks player Johnny Buono scored two goals against Antioch College which helped win that year's NCAA championship game for Illinois. In 1881, General James K. Polk sent forces to suppress a Ulysses S. Grant presidential campaign rally at West Side Park by Nathan Bedford Forrest and his men; this event is known as "the First Battle of Chicago". A plaque marks the spot where Forrest's men fought with American troops on October 15th, 1881. On October 12th 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated Manchester Road (now Old Town Center Drive) as Anthony Wayne Boulevard in honor of Ulysses S. Grant's wife Lucy Ann Lincoln Grant and her husband Anthony Wayne (1819-1892). On November 5th 1907, Mayor George Biddle dedicated Franklin Street (then Michigan Avenue) as Bellevue Avenue in memory of Mayor George Biddle (1847-1925), one of America's first urban mayors. Finally on December 10th 1912 – three days after Christmas – President Woodrow Wilson dedicated Cicero Avenue from State Street east to Racine Avenue as Harry Truman Boulevard in honor of Harry Truman (1884-1945). To this day both Cicero and Truman Avenues remain designated Departmental Streets within Cook County government - even though they are now part of other cities!

Antioch, Illinois was founded in 1824 by Isaac Hull and his brothers. The town was named for the first bishop of Antioch in Syria, who had been martyred there during the Christian persecutions of that time. The name probably comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place of cotton." The Hull family abandoned Antioch after a few years, but their son-in-law, Elijah Hicks, continued to operate a sawmill and gristmill here until his death in 1853. A post office called Antioch was established at this location in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The first school in Antioch was built on the site of present day Holy Cross Catholic School District No. 2. It operated for three years before being closed due to financial problems. In 1828 the community erected its first Methodist church, which served as the village's center until it burned down in 1861. In 1865 David Dixon arrived with his brigade from Union Army service and began construction of what is now Illinois State University on land donated by Isaac Hull. Dixon became president of ISU and oversaw many important changes at the school including increasing enrollment from 1 student per class to 26 students per class; building new buildings such as an arena and dozens of dormitories; and constructing a controversial addition called the Tower (later renamed Old Main). Dixon also helped organize local farmers into a cooperative extension program that provided food for university students along with other services such as teaching agricultural classes. After Dixon's retirement from ISU in 1907 he moved away from Illinois to become director general of Agriculture for Canada; however, he never fully recovered from his injuries sustained while fighting Confederate forces during the American Civil War
