In 1814, Antioch, Ill., was founded by Captain John Butler. It became a township in 1847 and was named after the Roman city of Antioch. The community began to prosper due to its location on the Mississippi River, its logging industry, and its canal system. In 1865, Antioch was annexed by Chicago and became an incorporated town. Its population peaked at 10,000 in 1925 but declined due to World War II and other factors. After the war ended, the town's economy deteriorated and it quickly lost many of its residents to moving away or leaving for other towns in Illinois. By 1990, there remain only a few hundred residents living in Antioch. Today, Antioch is a small village located about 20 miles north of Chicago along I-90. It has a museum that tells the story of its history from pre-historic times through the years since it joined Chicago as an incorporated town. The village also has a library with a collection of local history books dating back to 1847 which is open to the public from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday and from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday; as well as two restaurants: One serves Italian cuisine while another offers American Indian cuisine.
The town of Antioch was founded in 1836 by James M. Callahan, a landowner and business man from County Clare, Ireland. The first sawmill was built in 1837, and the first store was opened for business in 1840. The population of Antioch growth rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s due to influxes of new settlers from rural areas in Illinois and Kentucky. By 1860, Antioch had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1859, an act was passed by the Illinois General Assembly authorizing the erection of a railroad line through Antioch. The railroad became known as the Chicago & Northwestern Railway (C&NW). In addition to providing transportation links between Antioch and downtown Chicago, C&NW also served as an important link between eastern Illinois and western Indiana. As part of its role on the C&NW, Antioch played an important role in developing industrial neighborhoods such as Skokie and Northbrook that would later become majorreet centers throughout Illinois. Additionally, because it lay on one of the key trade corridors connecting Chicago with Indiana and Ohio, Antioch developed into a center for commerce and industry during this time period. During World War II, when American troops were stationed in nearby Skokie for training purposes-the town experienced significant growth within its borders due to military construction projects undertaken by both local businesses and military personnel themselves. As demand for housing increased following hostilities ceased nationally -and prices began to stabilize-the popularity ofSkokie among both civilians AND soldiers began to decline beginning in the mid-1970s; however -much like most communities throughout Cook County-an increase in development has since occurred at various points along Skokie's boundary lines.-
