The first open houses were held on October 15-16, 1916; among those who attended were business owners Harry Hargrave and Frank Pritchard who purchased land east of town along Kankakee River for what would become downtown.; Development stalled until World War II when heavy industry arrived at Antioch's doorstep; locomotives being parked outside Pioneer Street Railway Station served as evidence that industrial growth had left little or no physical impact on downtown areas such as Main Street or Fourth Avenue." In 1949, Businessman Everett Dickson donated $5 million to build an expressway through downtown called I-65 which directly linked Antioch with Peoria; this Highway brought significant traffic changes to downtown areas but also increased commercial opportunities for residents which led to more people coming into town overnight." After I-65 was built; heavy industry once again moved into eastern Antioch following job moves out west during post-war boom times; however this time there was much lessVisitation from nearby Peoria due in part to Interstate 294 bypassing town altogether."
