Antioch is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,510 at the 2010 census. Antioch is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Antioch is home to Antioch University and Fordham University. The first European settlers in Antioch were Dutch farmers and their families who arrived in 1795. They built a small cabin on the banks of the Sangamon River. In 1817, they founded a village named after themselves, Antioch, on land that they had purchased from the Pekin family. The village grew rapidly and by 1834 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1836, General James Kountz decided to make Illinois an slave state and prohibited slavery within its borders; as a result, many abolitionists moved to Illinois from Indiana and other states where slavery was legal or tolerated. Some of these refugees settled in Antioch where they started businesses such as grocery stores and flour mills. In 1862 during the American Civil War, residents took up arms against General Ulysses S Grant's Union army because he had ordered them not to fight for either side (the order was later rescinded). After two months' fighting, most of Corinth Township chose not to join forces with Grant's army and remained loyal to Abraham Lincoln instead; however, some residents did support Grant during his campaign for president that year. In 1865 when the Union army surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia following three years of hard fighting against Confederate troops under General Robert E Lee (), most inhabitants of Antioch left for new homes elsewhere in Cook County or Will County – except for one man who continued living there until his death in 1937 (). He was Elijah Jethro Bowen (), also known as "Mr." Bowen (). Mr.. Bowen owned several hundred acres (almost ) north of town along the Sangamon River which he used for farming purposes until his death inspired local farmers to purchase additional land east of town consistent with plans to create an agricultural community called "Bowenville". Today much of what once comprised Mr.. Bowen's property remains unoccupied but portions are leased out for farm use by various organizations including Forest Preserve District #4 which owns about .about half of all remaining tracts situated near Bowmanville proper; tract #2 located west-northwest corner bounded by State Road 100N & State Road 25E & Holmes Rd.; tract #3 located northeast corner bounded by State Road 100W & State Road 25B; and tract #4 located east-southeast corner bounded by Holmes Rd., SR 100W (& US 20), & SR 25E

This caused tension between the two communities and eventually violence broke out. Eventually Steenbeck won out and Antioch lost all its trade opportunities because of it- until finally someone solved the problem by moving them both away from each other!
The first public school in Antioch, Illinois was opened in 1853. The town of Antioch was founded by citizens of the surrounding area who desired to create a community that would be self-sufficient. The first school was a small building on the corner of Railroad Avenue and First Street. In 1857, the town made an agreement with the Illinois Central Railroad to lease land for a new school. Construction began on the new school in 1861 and it opened its doors to students in 1862. The original school building still stands today and is used as offices by the Antioch School District.
