Bednar opened a store called the Sporting Goods Exchange in what is now known as the Old Main building on State Street. At that time, Alton was a small town with only a few hundred residents. Bednar started selling targets and other shooting supplies from his store, which soon became an important part of the community. In 1912, John Fenton opened his own sporting goods store on State Street in what is now known as Fenton Place. The shop provided customers with all types of shooting supplies and tools including target holders. Over time, Fenton's store became well-known for its excellent customer service and exceptional quality products. In 1951, Averell Harriman bought Fenton Place from John Fenton and continued to run the business until his death in 1957. Harriman was an influential figure in American gunpolitics and played a significant role in developing modern firearms regulation laws. Alton, Ill. is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the seat of Kane County government. Alton has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries. In 1819, General James K. Polk journeyed through Kane County on his way to join Ulysses S. Grant in the Union army during the American Civil War and stopped in Alton for supplies. He recommended Alton be named after him as a place where he could rest and receive medical attention should he become injured on campaign trail or battle field.[2] On July 10, 1825, a board voted to rename Alton "Polk's Town" in honor of Ulysses S. Grant's mentor and political ally (and brother-in-law).[3][4] The name stuck and remains in use today as part of the city's history. The first settler in what would become Alton was Levi Coffin who arrived from Virginia about 1798 with his family.[5] A ferry service operated between Alton Landing on Lake Michigan and Sangamon Harbor on Sangamon River until 1830 when ferries became too expensive to maintain and were discontinued altogether due to competition from other transportation methods such as canals[6]. In 1832 Samuel Morse established a post office at Niles Landing which served both towns before it was moved to its current location in 1848[7]. The first store opened within walking distance of present day Niles Road east side on December 15th1849 by John Wirtzinger Sr., one of three entrepreneurs who founded that tradition-driven retail center across town which now honors its pioneer ancestor annually with an event known as "Wirtzinger Day".[8][9] By 1860 there were twenty stores located throughout both towns with over 1,000 residents,[10][11] but mail delivery only began services between Alton Landing/Niles Landing/Altoona Beach via horse drawn wagons several years later followed by steamboats beginning around 1876[12][13]: these days we view them fondly along Main Street just south of present day Hinsdale Ave.: back then life was pretty simple! For many people this represented their only connection to outside world let alone commerce...the big box stores still dominated today! There are many stories associated with early settlers such as Levi Coffin; one legend tells how he took a wagonload of goods downriver to Cairo while war raged between America & Great Britain; upon reaching Cairo he found out that British troops had burned all his goods so he went into hiding until hostilities ended prior to returning home loaded down with treasures! One account even recounts how Coffin met Santa Claus himself while visiting Egypt – something most likely impossible given that no Christmas celebrations occurred during those years! Additionally locals were Elisha Stevens who settled near what is now central Park Circle (now North High School) after moving from Moline IL some time prior; another early settler known simply as "Pete" arrived soon thereafter also settling near modern day State Street Cemetery northwest corner Of State Street & South Elmhurst Avenue: Odds are you have not heard about this guy either - finding out may be more difficult than tryingTo find an old map or article online!! Social Publishing gave me some additional information about him which I will include hereunder: Pete came up river from Moline IL circa 1800 whereupon they built themselves a log cabin next door to what is now Northwestern High School along State St…he probably did this because free land then stretched out towardsChicago so there must have been some interest shown! [14],[15]: certainly someone like Pete wanted their piece of Illinois 🙂 When things started getting interesting around 1830 northwestern Indiana Territory merged into Illinois creating what would eventually become Chicago including much valuable real estate including most notably lots surrounding Central Park (See map below)! Well folks if you’re asking why didn’t somebody build an hotel or something closeby like DeKalb IL insteadof driving all the way out here? That may well explain it – costs always seemed high when starting off small 😉 So finally we come fullcircle back home at…..AlTON!!! What fun wouldn’t it be living vicariously thru our past????
