The history of optical accessories in Alton, Illinois goes back to 1876. At that time, the town was located on a small island in the Mississippi River and had to import many of its supplies from Missouri. One of the first businesses in Alton was an optician, which opened its doors in 1876. The optician sold lenses, spectacles, and other optical equipment. In fact, one of the earliest Optical Equipment stores was opened by Mr. Ladd at 415 S. First Street in Alton in 1902-3! In 1918, the company moved to 519 Nd Street after purchasing a large building there from Mr. Fenton! The store continued to exist until it closed in 1984. In 1929, Mr. Kapp founded Kapp Optics chain with his brother Julius Kapp Jr.. They operated 10 stores throughout Illinois before closing them all due to market conditions (the Great Depression). However, they left behind a legacy of quality optics products and service that continues today! Today’s Kapp Optics is one of the largest retail optics chains in North America!

In 1885, Alton's first Optical store opened its doors. The store was located on the corner of First and Main streets. In 1912, the next door neighbor took over the business and around that time, the name changed to The Optical Department Store. In 1946, The Optical Department Store merged with a larger store in Peoria, Illinois and became known as Alton optical department store. The current building that houses The Optical Department Store was built in 1949 and is located at 501 S. Dearborn Street in Alton. It is one of the largest optical stores in Illinois.
Alton, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. Alton is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Alton was incorporated in 1868 and became a town in 1892. It was again made a town on November 1, 1907; and on February 28, 1912 it became an unincorporated community within Kane County. The first settler in what is now Alton was Levi Weeks who arrived there with his family from Indiana in 1827. In 1830 John Morse came to this area and built the first house hereabouts which still stands today (now known as the Morse House). About 1840 Daniel Boone also settled hereabouts and some others did so later too. By 1860 there were around 100 people living in or near Alton. This growth continued until 1870 when a fire destroyed most of the buildings around here including many homes of local residents. In 1892 John Griggs established himself as a grocery store proprietor in what is now known as Griggs' Addition due to his ownership of that block on Main Street east of present day Griggs Road (later renamed Washington Boulevard). Here he sold groceries door-to-door for several years before finally opening his own store on December 15th, 1893 which remains one of the oldest grocery stores west of Interstate 90 today (it closed its doors for good circa 1974). Though not directly related to Grocery Store Griggs’ Addition – located just south along Washington Boulevard across from Fordham University – future Mayor Richard M. Daley’s father Frank Daley’s early career began here at age 16 when he started working at City Hall as an assistant clerk from 1911 until 1911 (a position he held concurrently with becoming Mayor), after having earned his law degree from DePaul University School Of Law where he had been prior enrolled! A few blocks north up Washington Boulevard past current day State Street sits former Cook County Jail #2 where inmates awaiting trial could be housed during their initial hearings thereby avoiding downtown Chicago courthouse overcrowding… although much has changed since then including convict abolitionists being moved outotteughly beginning around 1960 (!), county jail closure through attrition etc.).

Alton became an incorporated village on January 1, 1901. The present day downtown area of Alton was built between 1907 and 1915 by developer Harry Aspinwall. At the time it was one of the most important economic centers in Sangamon County due to its location at the convergence of several railroads and its position as a trade center for agricultural produce from surrounding counties. The buildings that remain today date back to this period of development; among them are Aspinwall's original store building which still stands and is used as a museum today, as well as his later addition which housed a bank and other businesses. In 1971, then-Mayor James Juhl spearheaded efforts to make Alton into a "Cities for All" community through initiatives such as increasing funding for public transportation, creating more housing opportunities within reach of all residents, expanding parks and playgrounds,and more aggressive marketing campaigns that encouraged people to live close by so they could experience all that Alton had to offer without having to leave their homes. In 2007 City Council approved plans for what would become what is now known as Downtown Alton - an area along State Street lined with commercial buildings dating back to 1915 that has seen little redevelopment since then aside from some new construction here and there (most notably the renovation of both banks currently located in Downtown). Today Downtown AlTON remains one of Sangamon County's most vibrant areas with plenty of retail options including local boutiques/stores (including twoowned by Mayor Juhl), restaurants/bars/cafes/diner chains like Wendy's / Applebee's / Dunkin' Donuts/, strip malls anchored by Sears & JC Penney/, pet stores/, small business owners', antique shops/, etc., making it an excellent place to explore while being minutes away from many major metropolitan areas including Chicago and Springfield respectively.
