Alton, Illinois is a city in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,664 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sangamon County. The town of Alton was founded in 1837 by James Witherspoon and his family. Alton was incorporated as a city in 1909. The current mayor is Democrat Melissa Harris-Quintanilla. The first permanent settler in what would become Alton was James Witherspoon who arrived with his family from Massachusetts on December 21, 1836. Witherspoon built the first house on this site which he named "Alton" after himself and two others who had accompanied him: Ephraim Quincy and John Callahan (or Carlin). In 1837, Witherspoon's brother Uriah set up a tannery here which became one of the largest tanning operations in America at that time. A post office called Alton was established at this location on October 15, 1839; it remained in operation until it was discontinued on February 14, 1865. In addition to its role as the county seat for Sangamon County from 1837 through 1865, Alton also served as an important manufacturing center during these years; notably becoming home to several large breweries including Peet's Coffee and Tea Company and First National Bank (now Wells Fargo). By 1890 however, there were only a handful of continuing small businesses left remaining in downtown Alton while most of the rest of the city had been turned into residential areas or commercial districts catering to larger populations elsewhere within Sangamon County. It wasn't until 1925 when downtown AlTON again became an important commercial district primarily servicing surrounding villages within Sangamon County that downtown business resumed its former prominence as a primary focus for local residents once again; however even then most people still relied largely upon rural deliveries such as groceries and buying goods local produce rather than traveling into town for their needs due to limited access outside of central arterial streets throughout much of south-central Illinois at that time – something which has continued up through today despite repeated attempts by MayorHarris Quintanilla to improve transportation options within town limits both inside/outside of City Hall) Even then though some business activity remains taking place primarily within more recent development located along main Streets like 3rd Street NE & University Avenue NW., many smaller businesses have increasingly relocated away from centrally located arterial streets towards suburban shopping malls or industrial parks more recently making Downtown Alton less significant economically speaking than it once did socially speaking given its lack thereof other major neighborhoods directly adjacent to it such as Urbana (northwest), Rockford (southwest), Danville (southeast), Normal Heights (northeast) & Bloomingdale Park (east). Today much like back then "DowntownAltton" consists mostly either older high rises [such as Stinson Place] or newer buildings converted from singlefamily homes [such as Lighthouse Towers] used mainly for professional offices or otherResidents working remotely from their houses/condos etc.- Most businesses are now open 24 hrs longdays/weeks365 days year round - One exception being KFC where they operate all day long 365 days year round - Another exception being Bed Bath & Beyond which operates only 9am-9pm Mon thru Fri
