It consisted of a large white bull’s head with a red crosshair drawn across its forehead. During World War II, gun targets were used as part of training for military personnel in the nearby town of Rockford. In 1951, city leaders decided that they would no longer support such activities because they feared that they would lead to social unrest among the community’s residents. However, some members of the community continued to use gun targets at their homes until 1978 when Mayor James Pritchett declared that all Target shooting facilities must be closed pursuant to state regulations passed at that time limiting firearms on school campuses. In recent years,gun targets have again become popular within Alton thanks to their simplicity and easy availability online or from local retailers. Alton is a city in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sangamon County. Alton was founded on July 4, 1814 by Joshua H. Smith and others as a site for an Christian missionary station called Zion Station. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to its location on the Mississippi River between Cairo and Vandalia, Illinois. The first settler in Alton were two brothers named Nicholas and John Saucier who arrived in 1835 from France. They erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street about four miles east of present-day Alton Junction. In 1839, three brothers named Lewis (John) Davenport, Solomon Davenport and Amos Davenport established themselves in what is now downtown Alton with land they had bought from Nicholas Saucier. They built a frame courthouse about 12 blocks north of where it stands today on State Street across from present-day First Union Bank building (now Jiffy Lube). In 1847, James Mott organized the first Masonic Lodge in this area when he moved from Bloomington to Alton to open a successful general store there. He also began purchasing land adjacent to his store for additions to his farmstead which would eventually become known as Mott Place. In 1850, he donated land east ofpresent-day Main Street for use byaversary schools which became Grinnell High School; see also: Grinnell College Today By 1860, many businesses were scattered around downtown Alton due to growth along the Mississippi River near Cairo; see also: Downtown Cairo Today In 1865–1867 Abraham Lincoln visited this area while campaigning for election as President; he inspected General Store #3 which stood then at what is now Center Avenue just south of Third Street corner before returning home via steamboat downriver to Springfield on May 10th 1865 . This event marks one of few times that railroads travelling through this region played an important role in Ulysses S Grant’s political career . [See photograph below] A post office was established at downtown Alton in 1870 but it closed operation in 1893 because postage rates were high relative to other areas at that time . In 1886–1887 local farmers organised “The Great Chicago Grain Strike” challenging large grain prices being charged by eastern merchants resulting in increased production throughout Northwestern Illinois caused by increased demand following improved transportation infrastructure

During World War I, Alton served as a training ground for US military units deployed throughout Europe. After World War II, Alton experienced rapid growth and development as a bedroom community for Chicagoans; however, it has since regained some of its lost economic significance.
