Alton, Illinois is a small city in the northwestern corner of the state of Illinois. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 46,898 at the 2010 census. Alton was one of three cities in Forest County which were merged into DuPage County in 1847. The first residents of what is now Alton were Native American Sioux who hunted and traded with other tribes along the Great Lakes region. The town site was chosen by General Anthony Wayne as his headquarters during his survey of Lake Michigan Territory on maps drawn up between 1795 and 1800. In 1802, Alton became a part of State of Illinois when its territory was divided among that state, the United States, and Canada following the Louisiana Purchase. Alton's growth began soon after it incorporation as a village on January 1, 1836. A public school opened in 1840 and an arsenal opened two years later; both were used for local manufacturing until World War II when they became military stores. The post office operated from 1841 to 1865 but closed due to lack of mail service to rural residents outside Chicago proper. In 1870, however, Alton developed into a lumber town with sawmills on Cedar Street (later renamed North Western Boulevard) and a flour mill on East Main Street (now Wabash Avenue). By 1915 there were over 100 businesses employing more than 2,000 people in operation not just in Alton but also in nearby towns such as Leavenworth and Hinsdale; these communities had all been incorporated into DuPage County since its creation in 1847. Coal mining followed oil drilling until 1978; today only agricultural production takes place withinDuPage County boundaries beyond Alton limits because transportation costs are prohibitively expensive to send coal or oil eastward over I-90 from Cook County
