By 1907, when automobiles began becoming popular and travel into central Illinois became easier than ever before, Alton's growth continued unabated with its population surpassing 100,000 citizens by 1921 vernacular newspapers were established throughout various neighborhoods including downtown (now Business Park), Highland Park (later Addison), West Side (later Ridgefield) and Maywood vernacular radio stations WBBM-FM and WWPQ-AM wereCW operations at this time until 1959 when they transition into FM signals having rebroadcast sister station WPXR/WTSC under their current callsigns today). One major event that occurred during this time period was World War I which led to increased production at local munitions plants such as Pembroke Arsenal which employed over 1,500 people during that conflict alone resulting in increased tax revenues for both municipalities .
