It lies on the Chicago River and borders Joliet to the north, Rockford to the east, Peoria to the south and west, and Skokie to the northwest. The first permanent settler in what is now Alton Township was John White on April 20, 1827. Nevertheless there were several Indian Encounters before white people arrived in this area. A group of men led by Captn James Ketchum built a log cabin near present day Alton on May 12th of that year. Andrew Jenson also built a cabin here in 1829 but it burned down while being used as a storehouse years later. Alton had its start as a small community along with nearby Rockford when General David Dixon founded Dixon's Ferry Landing on October 6th of 1836 while he was leading an invasion into Indiana Territory from Illinois Territory. This landing served as an important transportation point for goods moving between Illinois and Indiana during this time period and also allowed for military operations against Native Americans living in these areas. Dixon's Ferry Landing became one of many settlements established throughout Kane County during this time as settlers began moving into this area from all over northern Illinois looking for land to settle or expand their businesses because of new opportunities opened up due to slavery bans imposed by Congress after slave insurrections seceded from Missouri in 1808-1811. By 1840 there were over 100 such settlements located throughout Kane County including Alton which helped contribute to increased trade activity within our county and even grew wealthy thanks to stocks and real estate holdings purchased by early settlers who saw these new opportunities。 In 1847 John Smedley erected his large frame house here on North Main Street which still stands today overlooking the river albeit damage done over time caused by strong winds that regularly pass through this portion of town during certain periods of its history! In 1850 Charles Goodyear laid out lots 1-3 block East & West of where his house now stands & started building what would become known as Goodyear's Corners Store which still stands today across from Northwest High School - one block west off North Main Street! gridlockmd #7
