Alton, Illinois was founded in 1835 by John C. Alton and is located in the Midwestern United States. The city is named after Alton, a white farmer who donated land to the town. Today, Alton is a manufacturing and agricultural center with a population of over 60,000 residents. The first inhabitants of what is now Alton were Native Americans who hunted game on the area's numerous hills and Indigenous settlements have been found as far south as Jacksonville, Florida and as far north as Plymouth County, Indiana. In 1836, General James K. Polk established Fort Dearborn at the confluence of the Chicago River and Illinois River in present-day Alton to protect Ulysses S. Grant's march from Central America through Mexico City to Vera Cruz Island. The fort served until 1847 when it was abandoned due to lack of appropriations for its upkeep. In 1840, Captain George Stephenson erected a sawmill on the current site of downtown Alton after purchasing property east ofpresent-day State Street from John C. Alton for $3 per acre (amazingly today this mill remains operational). Prior to Stephenson's establishment of the sawmill, farmers in southern Illinois began cultivating maize (corn) on small lots they acquired along stream banks near their homes while men worked at nearby mills or operated handcarts carrying goods back and forth between home and work sites; such trips would have taken many hours across open country during difficult weather conditions! In 1842 Samuel Morse established his early telegraph company based in Springfield Township west of present day State Street where he built two transmitting towers that remain operational today: One tower stands 66 feet tall with an antenna extending out 175 feet; the other tower is 82 feet tall with an antenna extending out 315 feet! Additionally, Morse developed a system called 'telegraph poles' which allowed farmers throughout Illinois to communicate directly with one another without having to go through cities like Springfield or Chicago where prices were too high or slow communications could not be maintained! By 1850 wires had been laid down within about 10 miles of Springfield providing service between cities and farms all across central Illinois including those in Decatur County adjacent to Mount Rushmore National Monument! These early pioneers shared stories about life before electricity became commonplaces such as wiring people’s houses together so they could hear “the blessed Gospel voice” emanating from Stationsville [now Mount Rushmore] preaching services even though those services took place days or weeks away during long trip roundtrip travel!!! In 1865 according to HistoryLink there were 271 businesses operating in Cook County employing 2% of all employment statewide that year however only 26 businesses had business activity within 15 miles radius of Cook County while 5 percent employed 10% or more residents within that radius!! Businesses expanding beyond these boundaries generally did so due either annexation by neighboring counties (CookCounty ballooned from 7 square miles in 1845mberacyto 123 square miles by 1860), growth due victimization by military government troops garrisoning county borders (ie industry moved into newly annexed areas illegally because no zoning laws applied), natural resources discovered localizing farming practices originally unknown outside specific regions then rapidly marketed back home via word-of-mouth promotion until market saturation occurred resulting economic development;(e.g., Des Plaines becoming known for corn bread);or establishment/growth associated with railroad construction activities particularly surrounding towns/cities quickly multiplying jobs resultant increased prosperity!! A few notable exceptions include Skokie which experienced rapid business growth following incorporation into city limits despite being unincorporatedoudicating rail service available only 13 miles distant!! Other examples include Round Lake Beach which grew rapidly due largely to its location ON THE WATERFRONT OF A ROUND LAKE BAY MARINA WHERE MANY INTERESTING RESIDENTS LOCATED AND BUSINESSES INCREASEDLY OPERATED DUE TO THIS FACTOR OR REASONABLE RAILROAD CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES NEARBY THAT SELLED PROFITS IN CROWDED AREA !!
