Alton is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Alton was founded in 1836 by General John Fenton and his family as an agricultural center on the banks of the Illinois River. The town became a railroad junction in 1872 and was named for Alton, England. The community grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on a main route between Chicago and St. Louis. A cotton gin was built in Alton in 1892 and made it one of the leading cotton towns in America. In 1916, Alton became home to Missouri State University, which remain there to this day. In 1948, Alton voters adopted a resolution proclaiming themselves "the City of Alma" after being given that name by then-mayor James Meeks Jr.. Alma has been called "the gold standard for city planning" by several architectural scholars since its selection as an alternate site for Stroudsburg University's new campus (now Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library). A variety of businesses have operated inAltaon over time such as grocery stores, banks, pharmacies etc... But most visibly now is the large number of restaurants that dot the downtown core with some serving up top notch quality food items at prices you can afford without breaking the bank!
Alton was founded in 1824 as a small, unincorporated community on the east side of the Des Plaines River. It was named for General John Alton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a colonel in the United States Army. The town grew rapidly after it became part of the Illinois Territory in 1827, and by 1830 it had a population of about 100 people. In 1834, Alton became an official village, and by 1840 its population had grown to more than 1,000 people. The town's growth slowed during the 1840s because of competition from nearby Chicago; however, by 1850 Alton had regained its previous level of prosperity. In 1870, however, a fire destroyed most of downtownAlton, reducing its population to around 200 people. A few years later, though, Alton began to experience another boom due to new investment and development along the riverfront. By 1880 its population had increased to over 2,500 people and it remained one of Chicago's most populous communities throughout the 19th century.
