Alton, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Alton may be derived from the Potawatomi word "al-tah", meaning "place of milk." The village site was first settled by early 18th century travelers on their way to and from St. Louis or Cairo. A post office called Alton been established in 1799 and remained in operation until 1872. In 1836, three brothers founded what became known as the Moline Manufacturing Company which manufactured flour, feed, straw and other items for local farmers. By 1860, Moline had become one of the largest wheat producing towns in Illinois with mills manufacturing over 1 million bushels of wheat per year! After several years of decline due to technological advances (railroad construction), Moline's fortunes began to improve when they merged with neighboring village of Decatur on April 6, 1893 becoming one municipality under one roof!Following World War I when railroads were greatly reduced in use and production slowed down across many industries;Moline experienced a rebirth that paralleled that of downtown Chicago during this time period The heyday of Alton came during World War II when vast numbers of soldiers moving into military service passed through town searching for work opportunities outside the homefront; a large number women also worked at local factories during this time period . After the war ended there was a significant decrease in population as people migrated back into their homes or left for better paying jobs elsewhere within Illinois :In recent years Alton has seen its economy continue to grow as more businesses entertown; however there are still some areas where economic stability remains elusive There are currently two high school schools located within Alton; One is Roosevelt High School which was opened in 2002 and offers students grades 9-12 including college preparatory classes ; while another high school was built adjacent to Roosevelt but has not opened yet (it will likely open after Roosevelt finishes its renovations) altho it's referred to as West Side Academy

However, while all these groups possessed traits similar to those seen in modern day humans – such as large hands and fingers – they also had differences that made them distinctly separate from other taxa. Alton is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,811. The first settlement in Alton was made on December 5, 1834 by Captain John Sanger and his party of settlers following the Santa Fe Trail. The town was named for General James B. Alton who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as Superintendent of Schools for Sangamon County. In 1845 local citizens chose to change the name from Alton to its present day form after defeating a proposal to rename it Tomahawk City. The townsite that now makes up part of Alton was located at what is now called State Street and Prairie Avenue. On January 1, 1850, a post office called "Alton" was established at this location and remained in operation until it closed on July 15, 1857. For many years local farmers would travel down State Street to deliver their crops toChicago because there were no railroad connections between Chicago and Sangamon County then. In1872 an act of Congress granted land east of State Street (now north of Prairie Avenue) to be set aside as Armour Road Township which became part of Cook County on November 15th, 1875. This gave rise to the nickname "The Arsenal".due largely to the presence of armories (gun factories) built throughout Cook County during this time On May 3rd 1865 Union soldiers under General Ulysses S Grant burned down part of Alton's courthouse buildings in order to intimidate residents into supporting Confederate forces during the American Civil War
