The first settler in what is now Alton was Levi Coffin who arrived on horseback from Kentucky in 1812. He built a cabin on an old trading path that crossed over the Kankakee River near present-day South Elgin and founded a town called New Market which he named after himself. By 1816, there were about twenty families living in New Market. In 1817, John Denton purchased land east of New Market from Coffin for $1,000 and laid out this new community as Alton on May 6th,1817 under the name "New Market." A post office was established at Alton on November 3rd, 1821 under the name "Altoona." In 1829, Captain Job Pemberton found gold near present-day Springbrook while exploring for settlements along what would become Cook County. This led to an influx of people into central Illinois and especially into Alton where mining became major industry by 1830s; this also contributed to population growth by creating more opportunity for men to get good jobs outside their homes without leaving their villages or townsfolk behind. In 1840 alone there were over one hundred families living in Alton with some six hundred residents working in agriculture or manufacturing across all five counties surrounding it during that decade; although this growth slowed down somewhat by 1850 due to factors such as price Wars between eastern capitalists and western farmers which caused increased competition among farmers for limited access to inputs such as water) Nevertheless throughout most of these years (up until 1861), agricultural production dominated local economies overall because transportation costs were much lower than prices charged elsewhere for goods transported overland from other parts of the country). The first settler to live in what now constitutes Alton Township was Samuel Herrington On October 16, 1836 James Hinton moved from Harper's Ferry Virginia with his family and three other families (the Newtons) into a cabin located west of present day shermans Ford on the north side of Black Creek which drained into the Sangamon River south of today's town limits They were one of many groups that set out across this vast territory during the 1830s seeking new land westward under Joseph Lincoln as part of the Great Western Migration
