Alton, Illinois is the oldest town in Illinois. It was founded on the banks of the Des Plaines River in 1809 by General James K. Polk and his wife, Lucy A. Polk. The town was named after Alton, a small village near Cincinnati, Ohio. The first organized militia company in Alton was called "The Company of Mounted Rifles" (CMR). This company was formed on October 15th, 1812 by order of Colonel John Spellman. The CMR served at various engagements throughout the War of 1812 including: Battle of Lundy's Lane (September 12, 1813), Battle of Springfield Armory (March 14-15, 1814), and Battle of Black Hawk Lake (November 17-18, 1814). On July 4th, 1861 Alton became the seat for Cook County when it was created from portions of DuPage and Kane Counties. On November 3rd, 1865 Alton became a city and on January 1st 1870 it annexed part ofDecatur Township
Alton, Illinois is a small city in the Sangamon County, Illinois area. The population was 12,896 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Champaign-Urbana metropolitan area. Alton is located on State Route 38 east of Urbana and west of Springfield. The town began as an Indian settlement called "Lenape" after their allies in Pennsylvania who had helped them during the French and Indian War. In 1812, Alton was platted as a village by General James Wilkinson after he discovered it while traveling through central Illinois on his way to conquer Kankakee County. The first settler in Alton was Joseph Wetherall who arrived from North Carolina in 1814. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. A post office called "Lenape" was established in 1816 and remained in operation until 1840; however, it never received any mail from Alton residents. In 1830, John Fenton purchased land east of present-day Main Street and built a cabin called "Ferton's Fort". This fort served as a Supply depot for the Iowa Volunteers during the American Civil War, and also housed prisoners of war when that conflict ended. When Fenton died in 1851, his wife Ruth bought additional land east of present-day Main Street and founded the town's first school which opened its doors to students on January 2, 1853 under teacher Isaac Asa Briggs (1811 - 1865). It wasn't until 1861 that Courthouse Square was platted with its present location including today's library/cafeteria complex adjacent to it on West Washington Avenue near Interstate 55 just past Park View Drive; this square encompassed all but one block then bounded by Fourth Street to the north (now College Avenue), Fifth Street to the south (now Elmira Road), Randolph Road to the west (now University Avenue), and White Oak Lane to the east (now Henryetta Boulevard). The courthouse structure still stands today across First National Bank lot from Courthouse Square just south of I-55 exit 47A off US Highway 362 southeast of downtown Champaign-Urbana

The United States produced more bullets than any other country during World War II, totaling over 620 million pounds (263 million kg) total projectile weight (.30 caliber through .50 caliber). After World War II, much efforts was made towards developing new bullet types and technologies so that ammunition could be produced more efficiently using modern technology. One such project was nicknamed “Bullet Maven” due to its success in creating new projectiles utilizing advanced materials like plastic and composites. Today, ammo is still an important part of military life and is widely used throughout various industries around the world including hunting, target shooting, law enforcement, and tactical operations. In 1907, when Kane County merged with Cook County to form Illinois, Alton continued to be part of Cook County but lost its village status. However, it regained this status in 1912 when it joined the new village of Rockford in that county. When Cook and DuPage Counties were merged into Illinois again on March 1, 2013, Alton also rejoined Du Page as an unincorporated community within Rockford Township.
