In 1847 James Hickey bought land east of present day Wabash Avenue and founded what would eventually become Hickeyville with his family as one of its initial settlers Hickeyville grew rapidly due to development along Wabash Avenue from early pioneers such as Hickey and his wife Sarah (née Thornton) Hickey who ran a store that served travelers stopping along the road en route to or from Chicago In 1865 Isaac Neely established Neely's Feed & Grain store at Fourth and State Streets which became an important factor in developing Alsip into a town By 1870, Alsip had over 20 businesses with 515 residents However, all but three businesses closed by 1880 due to competition from larger towns within 10 miles of Alsip . The only remaining business at this time was Snively's Grocery Store which continued operation until about 1914 . Despite this decline over time, Alsip retains its rural character with many farms still operating today including Hunt’ns Dairy Farm dating back to 1856 and most recently being owned by John Hunnicutt who purchased it in 2018 In 1916 Jules Stephenson organized the first municipal meeting for what would ultimately become village form under Section 7th General Laws of Illinois This occurred during wartime because village form could not be obtained through normal channels given that Cook County was then administered as part of state government On December 3rd 1916village meetings were held at various locations throughout the village resulting in establishment of drinking water systems, library/theater/curriculum department etcetera before voting began on May 16th 1917 for incorporation into full city status pursuant to section 9th General Laws Indiana Territory ) On June 1st 1917 incorporation papers were filed becoming known as “Alsip City” After years delays finally granting full city status on July 15th 1919 james hickory assumed leadership position filling vacant minutes role vacated by mayor ames johnston after he died suddenly aged 53 years old

In 1960, it became an independent municipality again when it merged with neighboring unincorporated community of North West Side to form what is now known as the City of Alsip. In March 2006, Mayor Joseph Monella announced that he would not seek re-election due to health concerns and would step down at the end of June 2006. On July 1st 2006 John Fritchey took over as Mayor effective immediately while Monella continued to serve as Vice Mayor until his resignation on October 6th 2006 which also made Fritchey Acting Mayor until November 3rd when elections were held for mayor and assessor-treasurer and George Zappala won election defeating incumbent Fritchey with 66% of the vote
