Alsip is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,318 at the 2010 census. Alsip is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the economic center of Cook County. It lies on the north side of Chicago and has a rich history dating back to 1871 when it was founded as a small settlement by German immigrants. Alsip has undergone many changes since then, including becoming one of the most diverse towns in Illinois with a wide range of cultures. Today, Alsip remains an important cultural and commercial center for southwestern Cook County. The name "Alsip" means "place where apples are grown." The first settler in Alsip was Johann Friedrich Mueller who arrived in 1871 from Germany and built a farm on land that today includes parts of present-day Alsip, Elmhurst Village, Park Ridge neighborhood, and nearby Maywood. Mueller's farmstead survives to this day (as does adjacent Morrell Road). On October 26, 1871, two weeks after Mueller's arrival in what is now Alsip Township, he married Anna Elisabeth Fischer from Wiesbaden am Rhein (modern Waldenburg). Anna was born on October 17th, 1848 in Wiesbaden am Rhein; her parents were Catharine Sophie Bauer (1788-1859) and Maximilian Bauer (1820-1893). She married Johann Friedrich Muller because she wanted to join him permanently in America. At that time only men could immigrate to America through Ellis Island; women did not yet have the right to vote or own property! Johann Friedrich Muller soon had children: Wilhelm Ludwig Muller (1872-1937), Johannes Maximilian Muller (1874-1950), Maria Therese Muller (born November 10th - died December 5th 1888), Johanna Elisabeth Muller de la Motte Rochechouart (born February 12th - died March 2nd 1912), Ernst Julius Müller von der Buckelsdorf(1875-1953) and Helene Elise Müller Kühn(baptized December 25th 1865 - died February 4th 1946). In addition to his wife AnnaElisabeth Fischer he also had one son with his second wife Frieda Augusta Kapp: Eduard August Müller von der Buckelsdorf(1882-1967). In their early years they farmed some seventy acres of land which they continued to do until they sold out around 1900 due largely to changed market conditions caused by railroad development near them. By 1870 there were over 100 people living hereabouts; however by 1900 only 8 remained living hereabouts while 85% of all agricultural production went into Chicago! Mueller became involved with various businesses along the way including being president & treasurer for two local banks – First National Bank & Trust Company and American Mutual Life Insurance Company – both located just south of downtown Chicago at Randolph Street & Michigan Avenue before moving westward into new territory starting at Griggs Lane west of Cicero avenue/ Milwaukee Road just north Of Humboldt Parkway/ Interstate 55 A few miles east off I-55 was First National Bank which merged into Federated Sugar Refining Co., Incorporated 1913 later becoming Drexel Burnham Lambert Corporation 1966 but returned as First Natl Bank again 2005 After leaving bank presidency he cofounded Farmers Savings& Loan Association 1916 still operating today as First National Communitybankers Assoc 1960 Main Street where he met his future wife Mable Tompkins Moran 1908 They also started their own grocery store there called 'Morrell's'. Mrs Moran ran it until her death circa 1976 followed byhusband’s death 1948 family operated business continued until 1984 when FDIC took over operation

In 1854, Aurora merged with Alsip to become one municipality. The first post office opened in Alsip on January 1, 1857. On December 12, 1861, the City Council voted to annex the neighboring village of Mount Prospect into AlsIP. On March 3, 1922, Alsip annexed the village of Arlington Heights which had been part of North Side Township since it was formed from a merger between two villages: Hinsdale (now Park Ridge) and Mount Prospect.
