The first post office was established in Alsip on October 10, 1840; it continued serving until November 15, 1846 when it was moved to Molineux because of construction work on the new Capitol Building (now known as State Street). In 1851-1853 two sawmills operated within walking distance of downtown Alsip; these mills are now gone but their demand for lumber kept alive some semblance of manufacturing activity until around World War II when all manufacturing activities bypassed Alsip due to advances in technology/chemicals production elsewhere. One notable resident during this time period was Julius Rosenwald who opened his first Sears store here before moving operations upriver to Kenwood Avenue later still becoming head honcho at Sears Tower which stands today just south of downtownChicago."
