Alsip is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Alsip was George Stephenson, who built a cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street in 1827. He and his family were followed by John Smith and other pioneers in 1829-30. The town site was patented to George Stephenson on November 8, 1830. In 1831, Stephenson's son James established a ferry service from Alsip to the McDonough River for passengers and goods between Alsip and Aurora (now West Dundee). This business continued until about 1847 when the bridge over McDonough became available for vehicular traffic only. In 1835-36, Alsip had two stores: one operated by Joshua Davenport and another by Nicholas Longworth. A post office was opened in Alsip on February 17, 1840; it remained open until it was discontinued on October 15th 1909. In 1845-46 three homes were built for Thomas Edison near junction of Cottage Grove Road with State Road 9 north of present day Market Square; these residences still stand today as part of Edison Park Historic District which also includes their original building sites and adjacent ground properties used as a Ford Motor Company research center during World War II A small schoolhouse called "Pioneer School" stood near where US Highway 53 crosses State Road 9 southeast of Market Square in 1865 but this building too has since been demolished or replaced by more recent structures including an apartment complex that stands today across US Highway 53 from Pioneer Schoolsite
