The first gun sight in Alsip was a simple iron post with a circle on it positioned at the front door of a local grocery store. In 1892, General John Logan founded the Logan Gun Company in Alsip and began manufacturing firearms there. By 1910, the company had become one of the largest manufacturers of shotguns in America. In 1916, General Hugh Johnson became president and CEO of Logan Gun Company and addedGunsight production to their line-up. From 1916 until 1954, Gunsight manufactured all types of rifle sights including reflex sights (for rifles) and Target turrets (for handguns). These turret sights were used for target shooting competitions as well as personal defense purposes. In 1954, Gunsight merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form what is now Winchester Firearms Corporation. As part from this merger, Winchester Manufacturing Corporation also purchased former competitor Remington Arms Company’s shotgun products business. In 1847, German immigrants founded Alsip, named for their home town of Alsdorf (now part of Hamburg), Germany. The settlers were attracted to land along both sides of the river because it offered good hunting and fishing opportunities. Navigation improved with construction of canals that linked Lake Michigan to the river basin in this period. The first post office at Alsip was opened in May 1849; it served what was then part of Winnetka Township and later Cook County). By 1860, when incorporation as a municipality took place, Alsip had a population of about 350 people and had developed into a commercial center due to its location on the river and access to goods brought downriver by steamboats. A factory operated by John Leland & Brothers became one of Illinois' largest producers of textiles until it closed during World War II; other large employers during this time included Jello Belly (founded 1921) and Bethlehem Steel (established 1926). In 1954, changes within Cook County led to annexation by LaPorte County; accordingly, Alsip lost its municipal status and became an unincorporated area within LaPorte County. However, annexation did not bring any significant changes to local government: all public services are still provided through City Hall staff or Mayor's Office direct descendants thereof who live outside city limits or have relocated since 2000; nor has there been any attempt made to develop either city's economy beyond tourism or service industry activities such as retail trade or professional offices-allowing for continuing economic development only if major investments are made that would significantly improve quality of life for residents within city limits rather than just adding more jobs inside City Hall itself; the mayor retains ultimate authority over all aspects related directly or indirectly to administration and governance within City Limits-just like every other elected official in our nation's capital!
