It is bordered by the towns of Winnetka to the north and Westmont to the south. Alsip has been inhabited by people for over 500 years. The first Europeans to visit what is now Alsip were Dutch traders who landed there in 1671 as part of their exploration of the Great Lakes region. In 1790, John Pritchard built a tavern here and called it "Pritchard's Tavern". In 1814, James Kapp founded a gristmill here which became known as Kapp's Mill until it was destroyed by fire in 1857. The settler George Weiser began farming in Alsip in 1837 and named his farm "Weiser's Farm." He also erected a house here that still stands today. In 1847, Wm. Farrand established a blacksmith shop here which became one of the largest smiths in Illinois. He continued operating it until his death in 1924. From 1830-1836, Amos Hollis operated an early cotton gin on land east of present day Alsip Boulevard owned by Wm.'Moses Hollis Sr.. This structure still stands and can be viewed from across Main Street (now US Highways 24/2). In 1830, Josephine Morse moved from her family’s farm near Decatur to purchase 4 acres (1 km²) of land at present day Alsip Boulevard for $4 per acre ($16 per hectare). She named her new settlement “Alsisippe” after her father-in-law’s birthplace – Ansbach am Rhein – Germany. With its several contributing buildings including meeting house and home built between 1830 and 1840 under construction only two remain: Meeting House #1 - now used as an office building on Kalamazoo Road; Meeting House #2 - now used as a garage on Parker Road; Schoolhouse - originally scheduled to be replaced with churches but never did; Store - first store building lot purchased near current intersection of Main Street & Parker Road was later renamed restaurant lot; First Baptist Church Building - original church building designed by Elisha Hunt? ; Masonic Lodge #422 No 2nd degree hall currently occupied as apartments development The village had no school until 1853 when Drury Elementary School openedsacred ground served primarily Roman Catholicsuntil 1955 when East Side Elementary School opened There are many stories about how this village came about such as one story involving Drury founder Cary Jourdan giving away 100 acres (40 hectares) for use as farmland around what is now downtown Alsip . Another story has it that local farmer David Dixon donated 3 miles (5 kilometers) around what is now downtown Alspitze so that people could erect homes without risking damage from floods or wind blown debris . Finally another story tells about how local lumbermens Willard Decker and Jesse Hennepin donated land southwest of downtown for erectionof blockhouses during World War II Mrs Maynard donated 55 acres (25 hectares) northwest corner FM 527 & northerly end FM 624 also known locallyas “Hennepin Heights”for similar purposes
