Alsip is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,869 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Alsip is located in the eastern section of the city of Chicago and borders to the north with North Branch Township, to the east with Skokie Township, to the south with Palatine Township and to the west with Elmhurst Township. The first settler in what would become Alsip was George Washington Carver who arrived in 1847. Agriculture became an important industry after railroads were built through Cook County. The first school was opened in 1851 by Reverend James Brown and taught grades one through twelve. There are several historic buildings located in Alsip including: The Old Post Office (1868), First Presbyterian Church (1879), The Sears Tower (1969), Methodist Episcopal Church (1908), Masonic Lodge No. 577 (1912) and John A. Garrigan House (1920). Other attractions include: Lake Michigan from where views can be seen from many homes; a golf course called "Plymouth Ridge" which offers lessons and public tournaments; an amusement park called "Wawa" which has rides, games, theaters and more; as well as a number of restaurants including Subway sandwich shops and Italian restaurants that have been around since before World War II

Alsip is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. Alsip is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered to the northwest by Lake Michigan and to the southeast by Racine. The first permanent settler in Alsip was John Fenton in 1836. He brought with him six families and began trading goods with other villages in this area. In 1843, Daniel Drake founded what would become known as Drake's Corners on the north side of Chicago Creek near present-day Alsip. This settlement grew quickly and by 1847 it had a store and post office. By 1860, there were over 50 people living in Alsip and it had its own schoolhouse. During the late 19th century, Alsip became one of three communities located along the now-defunct Milwaukee Road (the other two being West Pullman andGlen Ellyn). The railroad arrived here during this time period with several large construction projects such as building the Milwaukee–Waukegan Railway from Waukegan to downtown Chicago; these projects helped spur economic development around here as well as contribute to a growth that saw Alsip reach its current size by 1920. In 1922, when newly created Cook County was established, Alsip voted to incorporate into it instead of remaining separate from DuPage County which then contained more rural residents than urban ones. The incorporation process took many months due to strong opposition from some residents who felt they should retain their independent identity even though their village would be within county boundaries just like any other community in Cook County - something that changed when Illinois merged into United States government following World War II . The city's first mayor was Abram Hennepin who served from 1922 until his death in 1944; he also served as president of American Can Company which played a significant role in early civic development hereabouts including establishing local streetlights and paving roadsides throughout town for easy access by cars or bicyclists alike! Of course much progress has been made since then both inside and outside of our walls...thank you mayors past & present for making sure we are able to continue forward!
