Alsip is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,789 at the 2010 census. Alsip is located on the Fox River near the Indiana state line. It was laid out by John Pope in 1828 as part of the small village of Rome Township. The name "Alsip" is derived from Allegany Creek and French for "the bald heads". The first settler in what would become Alsip was George Washington Carden in 1830. In 1864, Samuel Bleeker founded a gristmill here which became one of Illinois' largest mills, with capacity to grind corn and flour into lard and other products until it closed its doors in 1978. In 1886, John Kapp bought the mill from bleeker's son-in-law and continued operations until it closed its doors also in 1978. After that time much of the local industry went out of business including paper making; however some light manufacturing still takes place today at various businesses including Ford Motor Company's plants just south of town on State Route 54 (formerly Route 128) near Interstate 55/I-55 exit 13A (Ford car manufacturing). According to The2010 U.S Census data, there are actually eleven zip codes within Kane County where residents identify themselves as being "Alsipians," but only nine have an actual resident population larger than 571 citizens: 8795 (the ZIP code next door to Alsip), 8901 (Belvidere), 8802 (Caroline Springs), 8815 (Cedar Crest), 8819 (Commerce City), 8821 (Democratic Lake), 8823 (Elyria Heights), and 8809 (Harrisonburg). One possible explanation could be that residents who identify as such may feel more comfortable living close to their friends or relatives rather than having to commute many miles away for services like healthcare or shopping centers. Additionally, according to unofficial 2018 estimates*, about 30% of all employees employed by Kane County government fall within ZIP code 8807*—making it quite likely that many people self-identify as Alsipians even though they live elsewhere within Kane County!

The population was 397 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Alsip were Quakers seeking religious freedom from England. They arrived in 1795 and founded Meeting House Hill on the site of present-day Alsip High School. They built a grange on Meeting House Hill that still stands today. The first store in Alsip was opened by John Fenton in 1814. The first post office was established here in 1825 and remained open until it closed in 1916. In 1853, Major General Winfield Scott Hancock, who had commanded American forces during the Mexican War and then served as Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant, moved from Chicago to start his own mercantile business here known as The Hancock Store & Warehouse Company Limited Partnership with Daniel Dennett as its president and clerk-treasurer; later it became The Hanks Clothing Corporation (Harding). In 1865–66 General Hancock sold his interest in The Hancock Store & Warehouse Company to Elisha Gray for $1 million; this gave rise to speculation that General Hancock had died childless but this rumor never proved true. Gray also bought an acreage east of town for $10 per acre from Benjamin Rushforth for $3 million which he used as his private estate called Rushforth Manor after himself and his wife Sarah corresponded with many people living near them there including William Emerson (the founder of Emerson College) about their intelligent plants and animals they raised there; eventually all property within walking distance of Rushforth Manor was developed intoRushforth Park which includes part of today's downtownAlsip skyline viewline across Elm Street toward old Main Street buildings seen mostly along Third Avenue between Quincy Market/Lakeview Terrace northward until taken over by University Village Development LLC late last year when development stopped on Third Avenue near Alexander Road) where several dozen high rises are currently being built or have been proposed especially along Randolph Road NW just beyond City limits entrance onto Interstate 70 bypassing downtown entirely coming down among trees hugging I-70 exit Give or take 5 blocks up I-670 loop around back northeast through Little Italy neighborhoods past two huge new grain elevators recently started building next to one another owned by See's Candies Incorporated just south of I-PASS truck stop outside Loop 610 traffic light no big words only pictures
