Alsip is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,368 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alsip was founded in 1837 by Germans and Irish immigrants who were escaping religious persecution in Ireland. The community grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location on the Fox River and its access to railroad transportation. Alsip became a suburb of Chicago after World War II. In 1973, Alsip merged with neighboring Aurora to form the largest city-county merger in United States history. The name "Alsip" is derived from the German word "alsips", meaning "fox river". The original settlers were farmers who came from Germany and Bayern County, north of Munich. By 1837, over 1,000 people had gathered around what would become known as Business Park Avenue to start trading goods and services along the banks of the Fox River which ran through their village. One early settler, John Fritchie (1801-1872), recalled that when he first arrived in 1837 there were no buildings or even fences between business districts on one side of the river and agricultural areas on another side; it was only after many years of hard work did they erect some rudimentary fence railing around their farmstead perimeter late into the 19th century. In 1840, two brothers named George Snider (1795-1868) and Johann Friedrich Snider (1797-1867) purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) of land adjacent to Business Park Avenue from John Fritchie for $1 per acre ($27 total). This property would eventually be divided into three townships: Manor Township onthe northwest corner of Business Park Avenue and Grandview Road; North Side Township onthe east side of Business Park Avenue between State Street and West Side Highway; South Side Township onthe southeast corner of Business Park Avenue between Grandview Road and Wabash Ave.). Each township had six farms within its boundaries: Manor – 2 farms; North Side – 4 farms; South Side – 2 farms + 1 store; Aurora – 3 stores+. In 1847 businessman Abraham Lincoln (1786-1865), who operated a tannery near Alsip Creek, donated land off Superior Boulevard for use as a public school district including an allium field where students could play until morning—a practice that continues today at Roosevelt High School acrossLimone Drive from his former tannery site! Mr Lincoln also donated $5 per acre ($50 total) towards building several additionals to what would later become Central High School which opened in 1902! On February 12th 1850 saw “Aurora” installed as Municipal District No 7 herewithall our says annexed thereto By & with full power thereof given by General Assembly April Term next following al dente’d To & for Local Use only . . . This marked one step forward for educational opportunity for residents hereabouts followed soon thereafter by advancements like Edison Elementary School just southwest on present day Dearborn Street/ alley behind Community Church being built following similar donation( s ). From this point onward various businesses started up along Dearborn Street such as breweries (Fulton Brewery founded 1865), grocers/chocolatiers Corner grocery store begun 1870′?, dry goods store First National Grocery 1886?, fire insurance company Hannibal Insurance Company 1895? before becoming incorporated as Joliet Civic Realty Co., Incorporated 1915.} When Lake Michigan filled up starting in 1893″ local businessmen petitioned state government unsuccessfully for permission to build a canal connecting AlsIP Creek with Lake Michigan providing easy transportation access via boat rather than walking or driving! In 1905 Illinois voters passed an act authorizing incorporation of municipalities located east or west of Cook County line but no action was ever taken! In 1913 Aurora reincorporated under new corporate laws changed its name to Joliet Civic RealtyCo., Incorporation date 1915.} Spurlock Drugs began selling drugs out back then called Hennepin Drug Store} Database Marketing Solutions began operationstemporarily calling itself Data Processing Services)} Finally Time Warner Cable beginning billing services hereunder} All these businesses helped create what we know today as Plainfield Neighborhood}. After years struggling through tough economic times brought about by global recession starting in 2008 Plainfield made history becoming first municipality within Cook CountyTo file For Chapter 11 bankruptcy In 2013!!!
