The town was incorporated in 1847 and became a city in 1907 when it annexed parts of neighboring Vernon Township. In 1927, Alsip merged with Vernon Township to form McLean County and has since been its only municipality. In 2007, Mayor Richard Mally announced that he would not seek reelection due to health concerns; however his successor Jason Hagedorn has carried on his policies as mayor since then. In 2012, Hagedorn announced that he will run for re-election next year as well but has yet to announce whether or not he will run again as an independent
