Alsip is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 16,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first firearms were made in Alsip by machinists and gunsmiths who worked for local riflemakers. In 1855, John A. Strother opened Strother's Gun Shop in what is today the old post office building on South Harrison Street. Strother manufactured handguns and rifles until 1861 when he moved his business to its current location on State Street just east of the expressway. In 1875, Isaac Wittenbach opened Wittenbach's Armory near where present-day Elmhurst Park stands. This armory produced pistols and rifles until 1903 when it closed due to lack of customers. In 1899, Harry Smith started Smith & Wesson Arms Company in what is now the old Masonic Temple on West Adams Boulevard west of Cicero Avenue. At this time Smith also began manufacturing revolvers (the first machine guns) which he marketed under the name "Chicago Typewriter." In 1902 he sold his company to George Anschutz who renamed it Anschutz Firearms Corporation (AFC). AFC produced pistols as well as machineguns and shotguns until 1957 when it merged with Remington Arms Company to form Remington Rand Corporation (RAC).

In 1824, a group of engineers working for the American Civil War developed a machine gun that fired bolts instead of shots. The guns were refinements on earlier designs and were used by Union soldiers to shoot down Confederate cannons. In 1898, an inventor named Garth Niblik started making T-shirts in his garage in western Massachusetts. The first T-shirt was made out of cotton and had a simple design: A rifleman holding up his weapon against a blue sky background. It was popularized by General John J. Pershing during World War I as part of the U.S. military’s “I am not a pacifist” campaign along with other patriotic slogans such as “America First” and “Duty, Honor, Country." During World War II, GI t-shirts became popular as part of the American Red Cross effort to helpmilered Allied troops fighting in Europe. The shirts also featured Stars and Stripes emblems and slogans such as "At This Time" or "We Will Not Be Broken." Today, firearm t-shirts are still popular among fans of various sports teams and other forms of entertainment; they are often worn at sporting events or whenever there is an opportunity to show support for one's favorite team or cause. The village center had a population of 1,542 in 2000. Alsip was platted in 1847 by farmers who were looking for a place to raise crops and sell goods to neighbors on the other side of the river. The first post office was established at Alsip in 1848. A log schoolhouse stood here from 1850-1854; it burned down that year and was replaced by a gristmill built in 1852 which still stands today as a historic landmark. In 1857, Samuel Morse set up his own telegraph line from Alsip to Rockford over the Fox River valley and he named this new town after Alfred Vail, one of his linemen. In 1870, General George Armstrong Custer's regiment arrived at Alsip and stationed there before moving on to Battle Creek where they skirmished with Native Americans near what is now Wrigley Field. A growth spurt followed during World War I when scores of German immigrants came to central Illinois seeking work in munitions plants or agriculture due to wartime shortages elsewhere in the Midwest. Many more Germans settled into Alsip after hostilities ended and many continued their businesses after war ended as well as buying land around town for farming purposes. This boom period came to an end with World War II when Germany's military power diminished following her defeat in 1945.. During the postwar years many factories closed down including those responsible for making aluminum cans and plastics until finally closures throughout all Central Illinois led to record low unemployment rates among young people during the late 1990's through 2000's notwithstanding some increased crime rates within town limits since then (see "Alsip AfterDark" article). However most residents have gradually regained their prior level of economic activity since 2001 despite some challenges posed by globalization (see "The Future of Alsip") such as rising energy prices accompanying changes brought about by recent global events like Hurricane Katrina which hit New Orleans just two miles away from town center!
