Alsip is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. Alsip is located southeast of Chicago and about northwest of Rockford. It is part of the West Side community area. The first permanent settler in Alsip Township was Nicholas Lacey on November 10, 1818. He and his family were the first to arrive in what would become DuPage County. A post office called "Alsip" was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. It processed mail from Rockford until that date. The first store built in Alsip Township was a general store and hotel which opened on December 12, 1830, by Major John Prentice Jr., one of the original settlers of DuPage County. The store operated for several years before being taken over by Hennepin & Co.'s grocery department late in 1835; this became known as the "Prentice Store". In 1836-37 Captain George Kelleher purchased land from Nicholas Lacey near present day Elm Street and Main Street and erected a grist mill on April 15th which he named after himself - Kelleher's Mill (now White Hall). The village began to grow rapidly with many new homes being erected along Elm Street between Main and Kelleher Streets during these early days; today much of this section of Elm Street has been replaced by commercial development including several large shopping malls dating back to the early 1990s when Alsip had only three stores remaining: One Stop Emporium (now Sears), JCPenney, and Kohl's Department Store - all closed by 2006. However, despite these setbacks over time Alspeth continues to thrive with its vibrant retail environment full of independent merchants who contribute greatly to its unique character both past and present

Alsip is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,872 at the 2010 census. Alsip is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Alsip was made on May 6, 1837 by John Stephenson and his brother-in-law Daniel Webster. The town was named for George Washington's birthplace, Alexandria Circuit Court House having been built there in 1829. The Stephenson brothers were instrumental in the early development of the village of Alsip and are buried there along with their father and mother. The village began as a small hamlet near present day Oak Park on the north side of Chicago Heights Road (now I-90) just south of State Street. On November 3, 1860, voters approved a charter to create an incorporated Village of Alsip with a population of 100 residents and to provide all necessary police services including fire protection and street sweeping; however due to financial problems within the newVillage it only had a population of 55 until July 1, 1861 when it passed an ordinance authorizing election by referendum of five trustees to manage affairs thereof which Approved!! Mayor Wigglesworth served two terms from 1865 thru 1867 then resigned effective January 1st In 1875 Isaac Krieger organized what would become Fox Lake Creamery Company Incorporated which became one of America's largest food processors after becoming operational at its current location on North Dale Avenue (then Cicero Avenue) adjacent to present day Midway Mall.. In 1896 Alfred Pritzker established Pritzker Restaurants which still operates today as one Of Chicago's most prestigious restaurants On December 12th 1893 Charles Haddon Wright settled in Alsip after spending some time while traveling through Europe on his " globe tour" he plans to document via picturesque villages such as this one
