Alsip was founded onOctober 4, 1847 by George Kedzie and his bride Anna Kirchhoff and named for German family of that name. The first settler in what would become Alsip (then just a rural area) was Johann Nepomuk Lehman who arrived in 1848. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Alsip Township. In 1870, the township had a population of 1,000 and it grew to 3,500 by 1890 when lumber interests began to grow in the area around Alsip. The first sawmill built in Alsip was built by John Alderfer and John Pappenheimer about 1872. Lumber production increased rapidly during this time as demand for wood from farms near Chicago grew high. Eventually several mills were located around Alsip- one with an output of up to 80 tons/day- making it one of the largest producers of lumber east of the Mississippi River. Industry declined during World War II because of wartime rationing but increased postwar demand led to another boom period for both industries and commerce throughout Cook County until they eventually peaked about 1950- 1960 due to technological advancements which made more products available at lower prices than ever before while maintaining quality control standards throughout manufacturing processes
