Algonquin is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,611 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Cook County and one of the most compact. Algonquin's ZIP code is 60501. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Illinois were French fur traders who established trading posts near present-day Algonquin in 1763 and 1764. English explorer David Thompson located Algonquin on November 5, 1804 while exploring the Great Lakes region for North American exploration. The first white settlers arrived in 1820 and soon developed a citrus grove and dairy farm around what is now Main Street. They named their community after the Iroquois word "algona," meaning "clear water." However, by 1830 they had abandoned Algonquin and only used it as a postal station for their other villages along the Great Lakes region. The village of Algonquin was platted on December 12, 1850 by Jabez Bowen from Rockford Township (now Butler Township), with assistance from Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail Sr.. The name was chosen because of its similarity to that of an Indian chief called Ojibwe Dahokia (the great Sioux war leader). The first post office opened at Algonquin on January 1, 1851; it closed on July 15, 1957 due to railroad construction nearby . In 1870–71 John Sibley built a sawmill over current Main Street which still stands today producing wood for furniture production until 1966 when it closed due to low demand; however, parts remain extant as part of the site's history museum . In 1899–1900 J. Murchison built a new gristmill on Old Highway 20 about one mile east of present day Main Street which still stands today grinding flour for local bread products such as bagels and pizzas; part remains extant as well as three associated buildings including a bakery which operated until 1973 . In 1923 Jens Jensen began growing maize hereabouts which became nationally known as maize puffs or Jay Puffs (a corruption of his original name). This product led to industry being set up around this land beginning with retail stores selling feedstock produced between 1937-1942 by Mr/Mrs Jensen’s son Larsen Myrdal ; these stores continue operating currently under various names including Red Robin Farms produce store & market or Fred Meyer produce store & market

The post office remained in operation until it closed on November 1, 1861. In 1865, Algonquin became the location of Illinois' first state capitol building. The building served as the state Capitol from 1865 to 1868 and again from 1870 to1875. Algonquin's population decreased from its peak during the early 1860s until it declined significantly after World War II. However, due to new housing developments that began developing in Algonquin during the late 1960s and 1970s, the Village has experienced a resurgence in recent years which is expected to continue into the future.
