Algonquin, Illinois is located in the heart of the Great Lakes region and has been a center for optical products manufacturing since the early 1800s. In 1814, Algonquin was founded by Captain John Rennie and his family as a small trading post on the Chicago River. By 1830, Algonquin had become an important optics center with its own mill and factory. In 1872, Algonquin became the home of Chicago's first photographic exhibition. The city's success in exhibiting photography led to increased demand for optical products and production grew rapidly. By 1910, Algonquin had become one of the leading Optical Manufacturing Centers in America. During World War II, optical industry played an important role in support of Allied war efforts. The United States Optical Company produced millions of dollars' worth of optical equipment and supplies that helped make victory possible. After World War II, many companies merged or went out of business within the Optical Industry; but Algonquin continued to be one of America's most successful optical centers until it closed its doors in 1984. Algonquin is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Algonquin has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 1,000 years and was first settled by the Potawatomi in 1812. The first Europeans to visit Algonquin were French missionaries in 1763 who made contact with the local Natives through trade and observation. The town was founded on a small island near what is now Lombard Street and Plymouth Avenue in 1836 as a result of land grants from General James K. Polk to twelve settlers led by John Davenport Sr.. In 1840, Algonquin incorporated as a village under the name of "Goodaleville". In 1848, it became an incorporated city and remained that way until 1949 when it united with neighboring streetserville to form one large municipality under the name of "Algonquin City". The original settler families all came from Ireland but some also came from Massachusetts and New York City. Many residents still hold Irish Gaelic culture today as well as English and Italian descent. Many businesses still operate out of their homes which are significant reminders of Algonquin's early days. One such business is Dooley’s Pub where locals often gather for afternoon drinks or concerts during summer months.Dooley's Pub - located on State Street between Wabash Avenue and Roosevelt Road - remains one of the most popular tourist destinations among visitors to Algonquin. Despite its popularity, Dooley's Pub has not been able to keep up with demands for seating due to its location within walking distance of many restaurants and bars whose doors open at any time during day or night. On July 10, 1812, United States President James K. Polk announced that the United States would annex Algonquin County, Illinois. The annexation was accomplished on October 1, 1812.
