The name "Addison" was chosen because it had been given to a village near Kingston, Ontario by Reverend John Addis who had travelled through that area some time before. The first permanent settler in what would become Addison was David Garrard who built a log cabin on land he bought from David Wilcoxen near present day Elmhurst Avenue and Michigan Street in 1814. He also established Garrard's Ford Store as one of the early pioneer commercial businesses in town.-David Garrard (1796-1868) In 1830, James Wilkinson donated 1/4 acre (0·9 hectares) of land north of present day Elmhurst Avenue for public use as an Agricultural Experiment Station led by Dr Samuel Morse and Dr Alfred Vail where they developed methods for growing corn and other grains using domesticated plants imported from Europe during this period.(Agriculture Experiment Station - later renamed National Institute of Standards & Technology).(Samuel Morse (1824-1906), Alfred Vail (1810-1885)) In 1840 Daniel Webster purchased 3 acres east of Elmhurst Ave from Jno Eilandt for $30 which formed what would be known as Webster Prairie according to him since he could not get title or deed until after death.) This tract became known as Webster Townshipveteran Gurdon Washburne bought it from Webster for $50 plus interest in 1861.(Gurdon Washburne Company - Later renamed American Gurdon Company) After Washburne died in 1865 another party obtained title for 3/8 section west ofWebster Prairie called East Washington townshipveteran Augustus Willmore got title for 5/8 section about 1915.(Augustus Willmore Company - later renamed Northwestern Indiana Pipe Line Company) In 1871 Alexander Graham Bell donated 1/2 mile wide strip statute line extending southeast from Main Street between State Road 56th northbound and State Road 160th southbound forming Belltown annexed into Addison.(Alexander Graham Bell Foundation -later renamed North Central Illinois Telephone Cooperative Association) In 1903 Jesse Weiser opened Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s store at 309 N Broadway which served as headquarters until 1918 when it moved across Route 1 to 601 W Wilson then 602 W Wilson until leased out again becoming Phone Warehouse #1 then Phone Warehouse #2 finally Phone Warehouse #3 operated out of 601 W Wilson 1935 until its sale to Sears Roebuck 1985.-Jesse Weiser (1847-1915) On October 24th 1907 Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s store at 309 N Broadway caught fire due unknown cause causing loss control and total destruction within 2 minutes leaving all inventory including tires completely destroyed.-Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co./Sears Roebuck 1985
