In 1827, General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked and burned Battle Creek Brewery near what is today Elmwood Avenue and State Street when Federal troops were moving through town to suppress an uprising by local Native Americans led by Chief Pontiac; this attack helped contribute to Forrests political career after he became general during the American Civil War era as well as fueling popular support for him among whites who felt that their rights were being violated at war despite his assurances that there would be no such thing as black soldiers among his forces. Addison's history dates back to 1809 when Nathaniel Eaton founded Eaton's Landing on the east side of Lake Michigan just north of present day Elmwood Avenue and State Street. From here Eaton ran a ferry service between Hull (now part of Flint) and Ottawa (now Ottawa Heights). In 1836, James Kapp purchased 640 acres northwest of Ford City from Amos Kendall for $5 per acre ($72/acre at current prices). With new resources influxed following reclamation activities funded primarily thru private donations biannually;much progress has been made since then including many new homes being built within city limits aswell as recognition given unto our city by various national organizations such as League Of Women Voters (!);currently Rankin Elementary School serves students grades PK - 4th grade while Stritch Middle School offers 5th - 8th grades
