Addison was founded in 1798 as a small community on the south side of the Potomac River outside of Washington, D.C.. After years of growth and development, Addison became an important educational and cultural center in central Virginia during the 19th century. In 1892 it became one of four townships within Arlington County – then part ofVirginia – and has since been its largest municipality by land area. The name "Addison" comes from John Addison (1697-1771), an early settler who owned large tracts of land in what is now Addison Township and served as its representative to Congress from 1781 to 1789 and again from 1793 to 1800. The town was platted on April 6, 1798 by Colonel George Washington himself with help from his friend Nicholas Culpeper. At first just 10 houses were built around a small square called "Bald Rock". The original name for the settlement was simply "Washington." Over time it grew into one of central Virginia's most significant communities with over 100 residents by 1800. Addison rapidly developed into an agricultural center due to its location on two major rivers: the Potomac River on the east side and James River on the west side which allowed for easy transportation connecting their crops to markets all across North America. In 1892 Addison became one of four townships within Arlington County – then partofVirginia–and has since been its largest municipality by land area. Addison, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 10,724 at the 2010 census. Addison is one of the oldest towns in Kane County and has been around since 1837. Addison is considered to be the "oldest city" in Kane County. The first settlers to arrive in Addison were farmers who came from Holland in 1837. After coming to Addison, they built a log cabin and started a small business. In 1841, John Hargrave purchased the land which now includes much of present-day Addison. Hargrave named this new settlement after his father-in-law, William Adair. In 1847, George Stephenson established a sawmill here and brought about significant changes to the community. From here began what would become an important tradition for Addison: its support of local government through cityhood status. This process began with a vote by residents in 1850 that designated their town as "city." In 1860, when Chicago became an incorporated city (it had been unincorporated for years), it was decided that Addison should become part of that city too; however, this motion failed by two votes margin due to lack of popular support from residents within the town itself. In 1865, following another vote by citizens within Addison to make it an independent municipality under City rules*, Mayor Leland Stanford offered annexation proposals for bothAddison and neighboringNormal* but neither proposal received enough votes to be accepted into City rule*. In 1915*, following World War I*, Addition again voted on whether or not it should become an independent municipality; this time it passed with 71% approval! As part of this decision making process *the mayor appointed four citizens as commissioners* who would have power over all aspects of municipal life within Addision – including zoning decisions, finance/budgeting, public works projects and firefighting*! The first commissioner was Wm Ayer*. Shortly thereafter *the commission developed ordinances* which governed all aspects of municipal life withinAddision until 1978 when City Council repealed them†.* A major event which took place during these early years were two meetings held between Mayor Stanford and representatives from various other municipalities in order to gain tips on how best operate as an international airport outside Chicago‡.* This trip helped solidify our reputation as being one of the most forward thinking airports in America! On October 12th 1974 we welcomed our first passenger(s): United Airlines Flight 587†.*
