On October 15th 1861,[1] nine slaves were executed by John Adams Williamson (an African American) outside of town limits near Galesburg after they were caught stealing hay from a local farmstead.[2] This event made Addison an important arbiter between pro-slavery parties who met there and decided which measures should be taken against abolitionists – such aslaws passed by the state legislature that year forbade black men from owning any property within watchable distance of white settlers.[3][4][5] The murder also symbolized violence against free blacks throughout much of 1861 throughout Illinois;[6][7] however some residents argued that Williamson had acted lawfully under law because he did not know his victim's identity (he assumed they were white).[8][9][10]
