In Addison, Illinois in the early 1920s, a group of scientists and engineers led by Dr. Willis W. Hawley developed an innovative new optical device called the "Hawley-Curtis prism." Addison, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 55,747 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest city in the Chicago metropolitan area after Chicago. Addison was founded by couples from rural England in 1836 as a small settlement on a bend of the Wabash River. The name Addison evolved from "adda," meaning "a stream" and "sonia," meaning "settlement." The first settler's house was built on what is now Elm Street. In 1837, three brothers named William, Henry and John Addison erected a log cabin near present-day Elmwood Avenue and Mifflin Street. This early settlement became known as Addison because of its location on an add (stream) called Addison Creek. By 1840, the population of Addison had grown to around 100 people. In 1846, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of colleges and universities throughout America; one of these institutions was to be located in Chicago at Racine College (later renamed Northwestern University). On October 16th that year – just two months after Abraham Lincoln's election as President –racine college received its charter from Act No. 10 of 1846 which provided for four institutions: one within each state; one each in New York City (Harvard University), Philadelphia (Universities College), Baltimore (University Park) and Albany (State University). In addition to his education at Harvard College Neil Armstrong earned his undergraduate degree from Univerities College before joining NASA as an astronaut in 1969. Harry Truman attended State University at Buffalo where he earned his law degree before being elected president
The town of Addison was founded in 1836 by Isaac Addison. The village of Addison was first organized in 1837. In 1846, the town and village were combined to form the city of Addison.
