Addison is a city in Addison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 96,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Addison County and home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The first European settlers in what would become Addison were Frenchmen who arrived in 1795. A group of Englishmen also came to the area in 1814 and founded a trading post near present-day Union Station. The town was named after Benjamin Addison, an Englishman who served as Mayor of London from 1798 to 1800. As one of the larger towns in central Illinois, Addison began to grow rapidly during the early 19th century due in part to its strategic location midway between Chicago and Springfield on the main east-west road corridor. In 1834, additions were made to Addison by General James K. Polk which resulted in a population growth rate of 50%. By 1870, there were over 4,000 residents living within town limits. By 1900, there had grown to over 10,000 residents with a downtown business district that included five banks and several stores along Main Street (now State Street). Growth continued into the 20th century as more people moved into town for jobs or education opportunities during times of economic prosperity such as World War I and II when industry became dominant in local economies; however significant immigration occurred during periods of social unrest such as The Great Depression which led to increased racial segregation within town limits until 1957 when all public housing was integrated into one seamless community called "Addisonsville". Addison, Illinois is a small city located in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 9,553 at the 2010 census. Addison is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies on the east bank of the Chicago River, about 5 miles north of Loop 610 and 10 miles south of downtown Chicago. Addison was founded by General John Addison as a settlement on what is now Addison Street in 1837. The first store in Addison opened its doors in 1840. In 1847, Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of a town within DuPage County for the cultivation and trade of agriculture and manufactures; this townsite was named Addison after General John Addison. In 1853, the town had a population of 1,500 people and it became a village in 1858. On July 1, 1860, when Illinois became an state with its own government, Addion became part of Cook County under that state's authority. The city's economy changed dramatically after World War II when large numbers of soldiers returned to America following Victory through Peace negotiations conducted in Europe and North Africa. The GI Bill led to widespread job opportunities for citizens who had studied or worked abroad during World War II. This economic turnaround helped to spur development around Willis Tower (now known as One Bryant Park), which began just north of where Addisons old post office building still stands today at 107th Street and State/Lake Drive (just west of Highway 60). Other major businesses that grew out from army barracks include American Express Company (1957), Xerox Corporation (1970), Motorola Solutions Inc.(2002) - now Qualcomm Incorporated - and Sears Holdings Corp.(1991). Tribune Media Company acquired WGN-TV from NBCUniversal in 2011 for $2 billion making it one member station owned by Comcast Corporation with 49% ownershipvested by Tribune Broadcasting Co., 31%owned by NBCUniversal Parks & Resorts Division via their affiliate WMTN-TV Lexington Indiana (the other half being held by GE Capital Partners LLC.) In November 2009 Mayor Tom Barrett announced plans to redevelop Race Track Road into an urban freeways style mixed use district containing over 100 million sq ft (11 acres) including commercial spaces along with new apartment units; construction is expected to begin next year once all approvals are received from various governmental entities including but not limited to City Councils acrossDuPage County
On December 3, 1814, the first permanent settler in Addison Township was James K. Polk. On October 14, 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the United States president and on January 20, 1865, he signed the "Fourteenth Amendment" to the Constitution which granted voting rights to citizens of African descent. The town of Addison was platted on February 8, 1837 by Captain John Hennepin.
