Addison was a small town in central Illinois, located on the banks of the Des Moines River. It post office was established in 1837, and had a population of about 150 people when it merged with neighboring village of Cedar Rapids to form the new city of Cedar Rapids in 1871. The original building which still stands in Addison served as the town hall until 1951. Addison's early history is clouded by mystery and controversy. Some say that it was founded by two men named Addison and Ames who migrated from Massachusetts in the late 1700s; others claim that it was founded by James Addison, an Englishman who arrived in 1795 and built a trading post at what is now known as nearby Dexter Avenue. In any case, Addison became an important center for trade and commerce during its earliest years. The first settler to arrive in what is now Addison was William Birdseye, who arrived around 1800.Birdseye erected a cabin on the bank of the Des Moines River near what is now Dexter Avenue and called his outpost "Addison." By 1837, however, local residents were starting to refer to their new community as "Addis." A couple months later, they finalized their name change when they voted to adopt a municipal charter incorporating them as "Addision" (and not "Addis"). Adding insult to injury, local officials refused to issue certificates of incorporation or permits for another year because they felt that adding another name would only lead to confusion among potential settlers - something that didn't seem likely given how well-known Cedar Rapids already seemed! In fact, within weeks of adopting their new name, locals had started erecting signs advertising their newfound municipality: "Welcome To Addision... Your Settlement On The Des Moines River!" In 1841*, following Iowa statehood, Cedar Rapids annexed Addision; but due to political factors ( chiefly money troubles) neither city ever grew beyond its initial size. However, since both cities shared overlapping borders* (*See Map), annexation never really stopped or reversed -adding one city into another always led to some degree of growth/collapse*. For all intents and purposes*, Addissony remained little more than an agricultural outpost* (* See map). Some believe that this lack of growth may have been because there wasn't enough demand for goods produced locally due eitherto lack OF available land or simply Because people preferredLivingInCedarRiverside OverLivingInAddition!? Anyway*, after several decades Of stagnation * (* see map), things changed When John Deere & Co moved into town In 1911 &started manufacturing Food Products Here!!! *(*see photo)!!
