The village of Addison first formed in 1847 as a result of the compromise between rivals Potawatomi and Shawnee Indian tribes over land west of Chicago on which both groups agreed to live together in peace as one people under one government. On July 8, 1847, Peter Addison organized a meeting to establish this new government with himself as its first president. The original plat for what became Addison was laid out in November 1848 by Allan Nevins after surveys were taken by him and two other men--Samuel Adams and Isaac Nourse--to plan streets and roads that would lead into the village. In 1850, when Surveyor General John Richardson visited Addison he noticed that it had not yet been built up to his expectations because there were no schools within reasonable distance of it – until then all children living near Chicago attended school here while their parents went to work or took care of families back home. Here Richards saw what he thought could be done if money could be found to build schools: "he said emphatically to me’ I shall never forget howpersistent I was about having schools established in this place; but we have got through nearly everything now without them" In 1865 Beginnings Bank started business in our little log building on Main Street opposite today's library before moving across Market Street into more permanent quarters east of Main Street where they remain today (now Belmont Bank). When Beginnings merged with First National bank in 1968 they occupied an entire block south of State Street between Washington Avenue (now Wabash Avenue) and Pulaski Road until their move across State street finally occurred whenFirst National moved into their present location just south of High School on September 15th 1984 when Centerpointe mall opened! One common industry during these early years was farming due to lack of transportation available or expensive resources such as coal or oil which caused many farmers/ businessmen to start their own companies doing things like trucking crops from field sites downstate onto railroads outside IL & Wisconsin for shipment directly intoChicago marketplaces! They also did some manufacturing starting with shoes before moving into radios & TVs etc….. local breweries started providing refreshments such as soft drinks (over time Coca Cola came along) leading downtowns where bars began serving beer BYO instead OF plastic cups! Oh those days……… Today we enjoy several fine restaurants inside & out serving up great food…………….I can go on forever!
