Addison is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Addison's history dates back to 1812 as a mill town on the east bank of the Illinois River. The community was founded by General Lewis Cass and his family on their farm near what is now Addison Village when they were granted land along the river for settlement by the U.S. government after the Mexican-American War. In 1835, James Kapp purchased land in Addison from General Lewis Cass and set up a sawmill there which soon became one of the most important mills in north central Illinois. In 1855, it passed into private hands and ceased production; however, it remained an important physical landmark until its destruction in 1951 during a tornado that struck Addison and neighboring village of Arlington. The Prior School District No. 1 opened in 1907 and served grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade; then students went to Arlington Junior High (grades 9-12) until 1972 when Arlington High School opened which continued serving grades 9-12 until 2006 when current school district boundaries moved to Urbana/Champaign Unified School District effective July 1st 2006 There are currently 6 elementary schools open: Burr Ridge Elementary (grades kindergarten through 3), Fairview Heights Elementary (4th grade thru 8th), Highland Park Elementary (9-10), Lincolnwood Middle / Jr./ Sr./junior high school (11th thru 12th), Midtown Academy charter academy (13 years old or younger) & Regency Learning Center with Preschool program which offers pre-kindergarten through 4th grade services also located within this same building Addison's economy has always been based on agriculture as well as several small businesses that have operated since before Prohibition ended manufacture of alcohol in America almost seventy years ago! Today many residents hereabouts continue to support local businesses by buying products from these local farmers either directly or indirectly! One such business is Hillside Farms Inc., located just off I Street next door to our post office! This company provides fresh produce year round for both local restaurants and grocery stores throughout Cook County!
