Addison, Illinois is a small city in the east central region of the United States. The population was 23,563 at the 2010 census. Addison is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Washington and his family in 1795 as a camp on the Fox River near present-day Aurora. The name "Addison" was chosen for its distance from other settlements in the region and because it would not be confused with nearby Springfield or Peoria. In 1818, General James K. Polk's army passed through Addison on their way to battle against Mexican forces at Palo Alto Bridge. As a result, Addison became one of only two American towns to witness combat during the Mexican-American War (the other being San Francisco). In 1847, John Sutter opened up what is now Sacramento County with land he had purchased from Native Americans at Rancho Tejon de la Loma. Settlement increased as farmers arrived in search of fertile land around Lake Tahoe and Feather Valley Reservoir. By 1860, Addison had reached 10,000 residents and was listed as a village in Frankfort Township Record Book No. 1 (dated June 15th)). On July 2nd 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and first took office after winning an election that November, Addison's Weekly Register reported that "a great many people are assembled about this place to attend his inauguration." On February 14th 1865 - days after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate troops attacked Fort Donelson - Union forces burned down Addisons courthouse and jail before retreating back into Tennessee across Johnson Road. Afterward there were no more reports of events in town for over four months until March 3rd 1865 when one report said "There has been some firing hereabouts but no damage done." The last report we have comes from April 22nd 1865 when tallied costs for damages caused during Sherman's march through Missouri City were $2 per house destroyed with total losses amounting to $30 ($ Million today). This event helped bring attention to what happened within our community shortly afterwards which may have saved many lives as Sherman made his way through our town

Addison, Ill. is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Addison's rich history began with its location on the banks of the Des Plaines River where European settlers first set foot in America in 1795. The earliest settler in Addison was Nicholas Armitage who arrived on July 4, 1795 and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1812, Joshua Hoadley purchased land from Armitage and started to spread farming around his new cabin site which he called "Hoadley's Grove." He also erected a large frame house on what is now Delaware Avenue in 1814. By 1825, Hoadley had two more houses built: one near Wabash Avenue and one east of Canal Street known as "Armitage's Grove." These were additions to his original home which stood until it was destroyed by fire on April 14, 1899. Two years later – October 25th – Adam Cuyler bought land adjacent to Hoadley's Grove from Joshua Hoadley for $500 and started to build what would become known as Cuyler's Prairie (later renamed Addison). This large tract of land included parts of what are today Elmira Road and First Avenue south of Chicago Road/First Lake Drive. After several years of construction, Cuyler’s Prairie became operational on December 1st 1830 when he made the first wagon trip overland from this location to Racine Junction via Dearborn Street (present day Elmira Road) in what is now Addison Township northwest of downtown Chicago. In 1835 John Sutter established Sutter Station about four miles northeast of present-day Addison along Dearborn Street between State Line Rd./Lincoln Highway and State Line Rd./Milwaukee Ave., making it the first post office west of the Mississippi River! In 1840 John Parkman moved from Racine to start an agricultural colony called Parkman’s Prairie about six miles southeast of present-day Addison along Dearborn St./Lake Shore Dr., soon followed by other pioneers including George Stephenson who founded Stephenson’s Depot within three miles northwest of our current town line approximately one mile northwestof Adair St./Garfield Ave.. On November 3rd 1840 Samuel French located Winthrop Plantation just south eastof Arlington Heights Rd/Kendall Rd., marking another important milestone for our community! In 1847 James Kappamine came overland from Canada with his family settling near “the bluffs” or geographic feature that stands today at Wabash & Harrison Avenues just southwest cornering Northwestern Blvd.– thus becoming one half way between Milwaukee (& Wayne Co.) &Chicago (& Cook Co.) . His farmstead eventually grew into modern day Addison . Mr Kappamine donated much acreage extending into Elgin Township for use as school district property during prohibition days . On February 26th 1850 James Prentice arrived at “Tabor Pointe” across Burr Ridge Pond from former Canadian Settlers mill site &built Fort Knox thereon subsequently naming this point after himself &additional info available online shows fort existed thru out most if not all 8 years prior explorer hostility w/native people persistently
Addison is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 381. It community is located on the banks of the Addison River. The Village of Addison was organized in 1856 as part of a larger area that included present-day Aurora and Elmhurst. The first post office opened in 1857. The name "Addison" was chosen because it seemed to be close to the old Dutch name for Holland (Adriaen), which had been meaning "place where grapes grow." In 1881, when Addison became a city, it acquired all but one block of land along the river. This left only two blocks south of Walnut Street undeveloped and used by farmers until electric lighting came to town in 1906. In 1907, construction began on what is now downtown Addison with money contributed by civic leaders including Mayor John Papp and Vice President Charles Evans Adams Jr.. A new library building was completed in 1908 and replaced an earlier structure that had been built over a period of years beginning in 1852 as part of a effort to improve education within the village limits. When this new building opened, it became the first public library in central Illinois. The addition of electric lights made possible many things that were once done manually such as farming, manufacturing and transportation; these new capabilities led to increased economic development around town while also reducing labor costs associated with manual tasks like harvesting crops or driving wagons filled with goods from one place to another
