Addison is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the seat of Addison County. As of January 1, 2019, the population was 23,828. The city is located on the west side of the Chicago metropolitan area, bordered by Cook County to the south and west and Lake Michigan to the north. The first European settlers arrived in early 1795 after a small party led by Captain John Mayhew sailed from what is now Liverpool, England on HMS "Centaur". They werefollowed by other Englishmen who had journeyed downriver from Canada during that year's revolution. On September 10, 1795, General Anthony Wayne anchored his forces at what is now Addison Heights for three days before attacking and capturing Fort Dearborn (later known as Shawangunk). The British burned much of their equipment but did not burn Addison Heights because it would have destroyed important munitions storage facilities for the American army under construction there at that time. After France ceded Canada to Great Britain in 1867, most French-speaking residents moved out of Illinois toward Quebec City while some continued to live in Addison until after World War II when they left for Quebec City again because they feared Japanese occupation. At various points throughout history plant fires or other understandings have been held between different cultures about how best to deal with Native Americans living near settlements--the first being an Indian Meeting which took place on October 5th in 1792 at Clearfield Tavern near today's downtown Addison; this meeting decided that all people should live together without distinction based upon their culture or language group (that is still prevailing today among many First Nations people living around metro Chicago). In 1865 when white men bought 160 acres (62 hectares) east of present day Ansett Drive for $2 per acre ($10 million then), they called themselves "Addisons" although - like many cities and towns founded as part of expanded agricultural production - very little land actually belonged to them and development only began after private individuals bought more land over time from farmers who never wanted it touched by government hands again. Despite recent setbacks faced by our economy due primarily to increased Mideast terrorism threats resultingin increased vehicle usage (& parking bans), my hope remains that we will see another period where Addison continues serve as a hubbub center for creativity, innovation & entrepreneurship across Coloradothat serves everyone well!
