Addison is a village in Addison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,683 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was first settled by families who had come overland from Kentucky and were looking for a new home. In 1822, the plat of Addison was filed with the government. It included land that would eventually be annexed to neighboring town of North Aurora as well as much of what is now known as Willoughby Township. The original inhabitants were mainly farmers and their animals; but soon enough there were also people living in homes and businesses in the village. In 1835, a store and post office were built in Addison by Captain John Sprague; it became one of the first commercial centres in what would become Cook County.
