Addison, Illinois is a town in Addison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,889 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in the Chicago metropolitan area and one of its ten sister cities. The original village of Addison was located on present-day Roosevelt Road east of the Fox River. Addison was platted in 1814 by Nicholas Hutton and James Shields as part of what would become Peoria Township. In 1827, Captain John Mifflin settled a claim on land west of the Fox River between Buffalo Road and Roosevelt Road and named it Addison after himself and his brother Joseph Addis (1808-1887). Mifflin's grant included 4 square miles (10 km²) of present-day Addison Heights. The first store in Addison opened in 1829 on First Street between Clinton Avenue and Prairie Avenue. The store became known as "The Store at Park Place." In 1830, Arent Canny built a small mill on White Oak Creek south of First Street that remains operational today. In 1836, Caleb Barnes founded a grocery store at Fifth Street and Clinton Avenue which became known as Barnes & Company. By 1840, Barnes had moved to an enlarged building at Third Street and Washington Boulevard that still stands today. In 1841–42 Daniel Webster established a gristmill at Third and Washington Boulevard that also remains operational today; this mill produced flour for early American flags flown from Fort Dearborn during the War for Independence. 2nd Lt Samuel Ladd served with distinction at Battle of Fallen Timbers under Capt Napolean Cooke October 20th 1794 Captain John Mifflin donated 5 acres (20 ha) near where he now lives to form what would become Racine Township in 1830 for future farmers who could only afford 3/8 acre (.25 ha) lots with 200 pounds (100 kg) or less per acre due to inflationary forces caused by new soil management techniques developed by Methodist Episcopal Minister Ebenezer Morse

In 1839, John Prentice built a sawmill on current Wabash Avenue and named it Addison Mill after himself and his father-in-law David Dixon who had also founded Dixonville near Aurora, Illinois some years earlier. The first post office called Clearbrook was established in 1834 but never opened because no one wanted to move away from their homes near Chicago's rapidly growing downtown areas. On February 10, 1840, James K Polk became President of the United States when he was elected as the 44th president of the United States over John Quincy Adams and appointed him Secretary of State with responsibility for Posts and Telegraphs under Ulysses S Grant during Reconstruction following America’s Civil War The community growth spurt came about due to two factors: 1) railroad construction starting up aroundClearbrook in1851; 2) an increased demand for agricultural products brought about by technology advances such as canning saltpetre production that began appearing early in this century
