Rexburg was founded in 1887 by John Rexburg and his partner, James W. McDonald. The town was named for Rexburg, Idaho, a small mining town in southeastern Oregon that had been renamed for General George Armstrong Custer in 1885. The first post office was established at the junction of the Snake and Salmon rivers on July 4, 1887. At its peak, Rexburg had a population of around 1,000 people. By 1907, however, the town's population had fallen to about 200 people due to numerous factors including the Panic of 1907 and the closure of many mines in eastern Oregon. In 1912, Rexburg became an incorporated city with a population ofaround 675 people. However, it declined in popularity following World War I and subsequent economic declines. In 1925, Rexburg merged with nearby Haydenville to form a new city-county seat which remained an independent municipality until 1959 when it became part of Boise County. Afterward, Rexburg experienced rapid growth as an agricultural center and gradually lost its importance as an industrial center. Beginning in the1980s however,Rexburgh has slowly regained its former status as an important agricultural community with several major projects such as the construction of the $15 million REXBURGH HILLS FARMING PROJECT which increased production at two local farms by 50%. Additionally there is also significant development taking place along Umatilla River Road including several large multifamily dwellings being built along with parkland and other public amenities; most notably Hellgate Park which is home to both professional football (NFL) teams Super Bowl XLVIII & XLIX Champions Seattle Seahawks & Green Bay Packers while also playing host to annual summer concerts by popular bands like Muse etc.; this area is known colloquially as "The triangle".
